Mine is running hot. At 97.5 i am averaging 99-100.5 temps when the heating unit has just turned off. So far we have one fully hatched (day 20) with 6 more pipped so far. There are 31 total that are all from my flock so I am not worried about hatch rate as this is my first time hatching. I am...

Thanks! I read about people pointing the eggs "pointy end down" when going into lockdown. What is considered "down? To my knowledge they will be on their sides so does it really matter which end is pointed where?

We just purchased one of these over the weekend. We will be filling it with barnyard mixes today as our first test. on day 18, should we take the eggs out of the egg turner and lay them on the wire mesh or let the chicks hatch in the turners? We eventually want to hatch quail also. For these...

    INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Thanks a million! Soo...more questions. If I put golf balls under her, would that eventually break her broodiness? I have 3 that are broody but don't want that many chicks. And I have a great rooster who loves his girls so I am sure I have fertile eggs. I'll check tonight.

I think I will just take all the eggs one day. Mark some of them and put them under her. How many should I give her?

Ok, stupid question, how do you tell fertile eggs? Should I remove all the eggs from the coop one night, check them (once I know how) and return them so I know they have all been laid the same day?

All right fellow BYCers, I am in need of some advice. I have an extremely broody buff Orpington and I have not been able to break her and I've tried all methods. My wife and I are at the point to where we are going to let her hatch out her eggs. Any advice is greatly appreciated as we have...

Where is the best/cheapest place to buy Cornish X

Meyers Hatchery has pretty good pricing depending on the amout you are wanting to purchase. I am going to be using Hoovers Hatchery this year because they have free shipping. I will be getting meat turkeys and then 4 weeks later we will get Cornish Cross. Their prices are decent and because we...

Back in the coop!!! Anyone heading to the Jasper County Fairgrounds Animal Swap/Flea Market this Sunday? My wife and kids will be out of town so I have told her I'm not responsible for what comes home with me... Also, we have officially decided to raise 15 turkeys and 50 cornish cross this year...

Whew, dodged some bullets at the animal swap/flea market today. Chicks for $1, Khaki ducklings for $3 and Pekin ducklings for $4! Almost came home with all 3!!!! Thank goodness my wife and I agreed that we aren't quite ready to add more.

Well bad news. Looks like our hive didn't survive the winter. Pretty bummed but hey, it happens. On the positive side, looks like we might be expanding our garden to a little over 2,000sqft. We are super excited!!!

I honestly don't know if they have turkeys. I will look at their website and see. I also know that we have talked about a duck or two and also meat birds. We are just very busy this spring and early summer so any time to use the brooder will have to be July or later.
