I give the girls suet cakes occasionally for a treat too. Mostly in the winter, but sometimes in early spring or fall. I look at the protein content and make sure to get the ones with the highest protein. There's one that's made with meal worms that's 10 percent. That's the one I usually...
Is anybody going to be at the Brooklyn Fair tomorrow, or the Woodstock Fair next week? I'm hoping to catch up with someone selling pullets. I'm looking for 2, at least 3 months old. Any breed is okay. I have a mixed flock and am just looking for a couple of pretty chicks to add to it. Thanks.
I would turn the soil over where the ant hill is and let your chickens have a feast. They'll eat the ants, any larvae or eggs they can get to (hence turning over the soil so they can get into it) and they may even be able to dig out the queen. Lots of good protein in there.
I planted mint around my coop a few years ago when I started seeing rats around. Once the mint took hold, the rats seemed to leave, along with all the other little rodents we tend to have in the woods. For anyone who doesn't want to use bait or traps I would recommend mint. It really seems to...
Once you feel you've gotten the immediate problem (numbers) under control, plant mint around your coop and run. Rodents HATE mint and will avoid it. Since even the roots are minty, they won't tunnel either. It's not harmful to chickens or other pets, so you don't have to worry like you do...
You mentioned that your coop is 2' off the ground, but you won't be using that space. I'm wondering why. I have a raised coop, and my run is attached so the girls can go under the coop for shade/shelter. You may want to consider that.
I keep my food and water in the run. They don't need to...
If you feel the problem is small enough, i.e. just the one rat (although usually it's not that simple), and you don't want to kill it, put poison out, or anything like that I may have a solution for you. We had a problem with rats a couple of years ago. There were a lot at the time, so I did...
I have had very good luck getting rid of rats by planting mint around the coop. Apparently they don't like it. You might try that. It spreads very easily, so you don't need a lot. And the minty roots also deter them from tunneling. If nothing else, you'll have some nice fresh mint to add to...
In addition, she'll lose her place in the pecking order if you keep her away from the others for too long. Two of my girls went into molt in February last year (of all times), and they were just fine snuggling up with the others. Your girl is really better off with her flock mates. There's...
I've posted this in other related places, but I think it bears repeating. Mice and rats don't like mint. Buy several peppermint plants (you don't need many, it spreads voraciously) and plant the mint around areas where there is a mouse or rat problem. The mice/rats will leave the area. No...
If the rats are coming from your neighbor's compost heap, they'll just keep multiplying and you'll be killing/trapping forever. I have found an excellent deterrent is to plant peppermint all around the coop. Rats and mice don't like it. And they won't even tunnel through the roots. Since you...
Another option might be one of those covered kitty litter pans. It's big enough, covered, and they won't be constantly pushing the dirt out becuase it's enclosed.
I've also found that sand and wood ashes works just as well as using DE, and it's a lot less expensive
Good luck.
What you need to think about is all the wild birds that don't have a nice coop to go into at night. They survive just fine. Chickens have nice little down coats on and will be just fine in cold weather. I'll bet the reason they were at the neighbors has more to do with the darkness than the...
