Did your girł(s) start laying normal again? One of mine consistently lays thin shelled, only one, of 16, so diet doesn't seem to be a problem. It's one of two girls, that much I know, and neither are bullied or unhealthy in general. Just curious if your problem resolved? Hope to hear from you...
We've had our flock for several years, successfully not losing any, nor having any significant issues. Each year we have added to the flock, things have been well, until recently.
One of our original hens was found hiding in a nesting box one night, practically mauled to death. No idea what...
We are in the middle of a mess here. Trying to sort out the 'problem kids' and twice now I've noticed one hen 'mount' other hens. Once when the rooster was present, and again this morning, when he was locked up in a smaller coop about 15 ft away (doing EVERYTHING possible you escape, let me tell...
I eagerly read your post, then scrolled for some answers, because I have a sorta-similar situation. I'm sorry for your problem. Guess I'll keep looking for answers elsewhere. Good luck!!! Hopefully won't be too long before someone with experience in this kind of bullying comes along and offers...
Wow, learn something new every day. We thought handling them would make them SAFER for grandkids in the long run. What a shame. So, the general consensus is get rid of the rooster. Not a problem, but I feel bad that I could have helped:/ cause it. As for the neighbor, he refuses to lock up his...
That's the thing, we don't allow her outside without being right next to us and that's not how we want to live. We assumed we could 'control' our rooster, but that's obviously not the case.
Thanks, we are kind of limited on fencing, as we rent. And we don't 'need' a roo, for fertilizing, but he has proven his worth in that we haven't lost a hen to date. Hadn't thought about the fact that the neighbor roo might come calling more, lol. That would be awful! His crow sounds like a...
I've searched the fourm and only found one close answer, but it didn't really fit our situation.
We have 10 hens and 1 rooster we ended up with and decided to keep for protection as we free range during the day. They were all raised together. Our closest neighbor (300 ft from our coop to...
Been perusing, and still can't tell.....bought these fluffy butts when they were a couple weeks old, the first week of June, 2013. Supposedly 'sexed', however, we've already had to get rid of a mean roo from the same bunch. We bought 7, and so far have had 1 confirmed roo....These two are very...
I don't know if you'll see this, I see the thread is old but thought it couldn't hurt to ask...we have a 7 week old who was attacked by a dog. She's doing quite well, but lost an eye and we thought the same thing 'eye patch'. Did you try it? If so, where'd you get one, or how did you make one...
Long story short, she started downhill again, had to go on a mission to get correct needle size. Ugh. Why do they make it so difficult?
Anyway, also got her a buddy, and they seem to be getting along fine. I'm going to limit their time together, I know Dylan still needs to rest and coup, and...
We decided to hold off, couldn't find enough 'meat' on her.... and I didn't want to hurt her worse. We'll re-evaluate as necessary. BUT she's eating. Yay! Here's a couple pics.
Also, DH got Tri-Vi-Sol (has iron), is that ok, or should I return it?
No, it's only the injectable kind, I talked to them about it at the feed store. I feel relatively confident in doing it , but am definitely waiting for DH to get home to help me hold her. On a VERY positive note, SHE ATE! I found that putting halved meal worms and scrambled eggs on a dark towel...
Thank you Eggcessive, I forgot about the eggs. Duh. I just got home, peeked in on her and am now here, looking again. I don't think her neck is looking odd, but I'll check. I had an appt in Sacramento this morning, so since my closest feed store didn't have antibiotics (and apparently lied about...
