Antibiotics are always a last resort for us. We are very aware of their downsides. It isn't a matter of being egg bound or a circulatory issue. Five of our chickens have the same symptoms. Like I said, my guess is the severe weather affected them. I will not have Tylan for several days so have...
This morning I found one of our chickens was wheezing. Her comb had a slight purple tint and she rattles/gurgles when she breathes. She is walking around, eating, albeit not as active as she usually is.
This evening I checked on the chickens and now four of them are making similar sounds and...
This is probably the last update since there isn't much more info I can gather at this point.
First chick is still unknown as far as breed. No muffs or beard, no real tail feathers either. Light gray/lavender but is growing out even lighter feathers.
Second darker chick finally grew a beard...
This is this second chick at almost ten weeks now. Starting to show small muffs/beard. The lavender cockerel still has no signs of a beard/muff and has grayish legs, not the black or dark gray I'd expect of the breed but that could change.
First (lighter) chick. No muffs/beard.
I got two Cochins from a breeder who breeds blu, black and splash Cochins (among other breeds). I was told both are blue but I'm wondering if this one is actually a splash. He/she is about 10 weeks old.
Updated pictures: Still not many changes. They're about eight weeks old now. One is definitely a cockerel. No muffs or beard to be seen. The first picture is a comparison of the first chick (the most questionable one) and another definite Ameraucana cockerel that I have who is the same age. They...
Second chick. Also feathering out much more quickly I'll continue to update periodically until I know for sure what these two, namely the first chick, turn out to be.
Updated pictures of the first chick. Not much change but much more feathering out in the last week than in the entire month before and the comb is turning pink so I'm guessing it's a cockerel, whatever breed it is.
Ok after a lot of staring at this bird and researching more breeds and colors, I'm not convinced this one in particular is an Ameraucana. I'm wondering if she might be a Lavender Wyandotte. I don't think this is even a pea comb but a rose comb. I did email the breeder to see if she breeds that...
And just for comparison, this is a chick from the same breeder she said is an Ameraucana. He's absolutely massive compared to the others and had pronounced muffs as a small chick.
This is the first chick at a few days old. Not as good of a picture, sorry. Hard to tell if there were muffs or not. The muffs aren't nearly as pronounced on either at their current age though.
If it helps, this is the second chick the day we brought them home so it would have been just a few days old. Again, was told this one was an Orpington so I didn't question it.
She doesn't have Cornish. She actually doesn't like the breed. I agree about the lack of feathers. They are growing and feathering out the slowest out of all of the chicks. We actually got an Ameraucana from the same breeder who has exploded with growth and is four times their size but is only a...
