Thanks Jed. That’s good news. The long tail feathers got me wondering. I’ll wait and see.

    Sapphire Gem pullet chicks, Rooster!

I bought 7 Sapphire Gems female chicks. Now three weeks old three are light blue, maybe a glimpse of barring. Tall, more upright and long tail feathers. The pullets are darker round body and no real tail. I’m thinking 3 roosters. What do you think? Photo of three chicks show the difference. And...

Pullet or Cockerel?! 2.5-3 week old chick! Sapphire Gem

I bought Sapphire Gem female chicks same age. But at 3 weeks old, three are bigger taller lighter colored and long tail feathers. Maybe glimpses of barred pattern. The other four are darker smaller and no tail feathers- I assume are the pullets. How do I post a photo? None of the symbols seem...

Baby chick or one year old laying nen

All good points. I’m still on the fence. If I could have more hens in town. I’d do both! ONE large error in my thread—It should state $45/hen!! Sorry for the typo. $45 changes the whole equation! Thanks for replying Honey Bee Homestead

    Coop rethink

I'm having my coop built by a carpenter, I can't do it! So I understand My opinion the greenhouse sounds and looks cool. (I looked into one) As others have posted there is a fair amount of renovating needed. Like all projects, one thing leads to another. Cost, labor and materials can get...

I checked out keeping chickens in my garage instead of building a coop. Ordinances won’t allow chickens in the garage.

My setbacks are 20ft from the east fence. 20ft from the west fence. My lot is 50ft wide, subtract the setbacks I have 10ft. Sidewalks on both sides leaves a 5ft wide strip for a coop site. I know it’s not ideal.

    Treats

90/10 rule. What would a 10% of treats amount be ? Black soldier fly larvae- teaspoon per hen, a tablespoon? My pullets will arrive at 8-12 weeks My taming process will be using treats as I sit down among them. So they trust me to handle them. Can 8-12 week old pullets have BSF larvae if I break...

On the farm my chickens were free range. Sometimes coop confined in part of a large barn. I decided to have my 5 hens, no matter what. So I started the process. Permit requirements completed and I got my permit, My coop setup isn’t ideal but it is what it is. Hey keep this discussion going...

A great idea if I had the room. Back yard is 50x30. Setback puts the coop in the only place it can go. I’m attaching three photos. Facing the coop site from my back step. Left is east fence burlap wrapped arborvitae, garage and patio, right side walk to SW corner of the fence. Narrow strip is...
