Topic of the Week - Coop Bedding and Waste Management; Deep Litter Method etc.

We love our girls and want to keep them healthy. Keep me posted on how you make out with my suggestion. I see you live in Ohio, no wonder you have some issues. I live NW Coast in Canada!

The pellets just breakdown to sawdust. I get the bags at the feed store as these are used for bedding in stalls horses. I just raked them smooth and when it warms up, i'll cover that area with topsoil and top seed it with quick start grass seed. Then we'll be back playing croquet on the lawn...

Topic of the Week - Coop Bedding and Waste Management; Deep Litter Method etc.

I only use the peat moss in their run, but shavings in their coop and laying boxes. Seems fine. I agree this is a crazy winter! My barn area lawn I had to put 14 bags of compressed pine pellets to soak up the water that was laying on the surface. I've owned our farm for 28 years and never had...

The peat moss is GREAT! I bought some at the nursery and it comes in bales. It just soaks up the moisture. It was cheap also. $12/bale and worked very well. If the chickens walk in wet areas they can get a bacteria that kills them!

I use about 5" of pine shavings in their coop and laying boxes. But out in their run, I use peat moss to soak up moisture from driving rain or snow. My son cleans it out every couple of weeks.

Keeping water from freezing in -degree weather

I live NW Coast and we don't have too many freezing mornings that freeze my hens water. But, when we do, I go out with super hot water from my kitchen in a bucket and pour it over their iced tub. It warms up their water and they love the warm water. That usually lasts all day until the night...

Comment by 'mirsy09' in article 'Helping your flock through molt'

One thing that helps hens keep laying thru the winter is to put a light timer in their coop. They need 12 hours of light each day. I put a light bulb and they love it as it also gives them warmth!

Comment by 'mirsy09' in item 'Marans'

I get eggs from my Black Marans every day, but they are young and just started laying. I do have some other Marans, but these eggs are a VERY dark brown. Some even have some very small litter brown spots. Little kids love the colours of all the eggs from my heritage hens. They look like an...

How to Break a Broody Hen

I remove my hen from the nest and put her in a stall in my barn with no nest. I just did that this week and I do it quite often. It's easy and after 3-4 days, I just put her back in the coop and she is fine and NOT broody.

How to Break a Broody Hen

When I have a broody hen, I simply take her out of the coop and put her in a stall with my young hens. There is no nest in the stall for them to lay in and they are only able to walk around on the shavings on the ground. After 3 or 4 days of this, I can return them to the coop with no more...

How to Break a Broody Hen

I have finally learnt how to cope with my broody hens. At 1st I put them in a wire dog crate that I put up on 2 buckets. I put the feed and water in the crate and after a few days of not being able to "sit" they were put back into the coop. Now I have an easier method as I have a vacant end...

How to Break a Broody Hen

Hi- I've now learnt to take them out of the coop and put them into a stall in my barn for a couple of days. There is no place for them to "sit" in a nest there. I keep this stall with a couple of birds that may need a little attention.... if the others are picking on them, or they get broody or...
