Wonderful, thank you! It sounds like the space shouldn't be an issue then. I hope we can figure out something with the water that would still allow the coop to be mobile...
I don't have a picture right now unfortunately, but I attached a picture from online that is a very similar idea. It's simply a large frame with wire mesh and a tarp overtop.
Do you have an idea of how many square feet the ducks would need in an enclosure like this? They would be penned up...
Hi all! I'm asking a question for a friend. He has a flock of Welsh Harlequin ducks that currently free range, but he'd like to start breeding them using a clan mating system. Obviously, this would require keeping them locked up during breeding season. He uses large hoop schooners for his...
Somebody farther up recommended Emmett Wilder for Dominiques, I'm going to second him! I'm on the east coast but if I'd been farther west I would have tried to buy from him.
Here is the Dominique Club of America breeder's directory: https://dominiqueclub.org/breeders-directory/. When I was...
Thanks for the suggestion! I've actually happened upon this farm before and it seems really cool. In the time since I made this post, though, I did find a breeder for Dominiques so I'm no longer looking, but thanks again!
Oh for sure, I don't at all expect people to stop shipping birds and I definitely don't think all experiences of it are like mine. But I do think it's true that it's probably not good for them and it's worth considering local options. But to each his own :)
Especially after this experience, I feel like that too. Besides, wouldn't it be nice to get birds locally and know they do well in your climate, have someone who knows them well to guide you, and be able to source more nearby? There's a lot of benefits to raising the same breed as your...
They were in the mail three whole days, and were shipped the day after they were born. Sadly, even though ten arrived alive, only 3 survived the first day.
They did not make it. I think it was just from really bad stress but I am worried I did something wrong. Although the breeder originally set 25 eggs and said all of them were viable, then lost 10 in the days leading up to hatching, which makes me think there could be a disease/genetic issue? I...
I recently ordered 25 Dominique chicks from a breeder, but due to incubator and shipping problems I now only have 3. I would still love to start a flock of them but am weary of shipping chickens again. Does anyone have some Doms, preferably females, you're looking to rehome or sell? I am not...
I bought them from a private breeder, and he's offered to send replacements but he has to set more eggs for it. So it would be another 4 weeks until they'd arrive and I just don't think I'm comfortable shipping chicks in November. The breeder is only having me pay for the ones still living in a...
Maybe I should do that next time. I lost a few more to what I can only attribute to stress from shipping and I'm starting to think this mail order thing is more heartbreak than it's worth. Other people seem to have good experiences though so maybe I'm just the exception :(
Just wanted to post a quick (and happy!) update! The tracking updated this morning, which I didn't notice until noon (the post office did not call as they'd promised to, but oh well). We went to go pick them up fully prepared for 15 dead birds, but were greeted with loud peeping! Only 2 arrived...
