    Sweet lone faverolle, bullied.

Here she is a couple weeks ago. Her comb and wattles are a little redder now though, and she's recently started squatting!

It did change! Everything settled down, I'm assuming it's because they established their pecking order. She's still a bit of a loner, but I think that's just the breed. She's a weird chicken. Haha.

    Beach sand in the coop?

We want to try sand in our coop instead of shavings. Would it be fine to use beach or river sand? Maybe rinse it first? Opinions? Thanks!

Chicken math - To trade or not to trade.

Well it was all for nothing. Not 15 minutes after getting her home after the trade, my neighbor knocked on my door wanting to trade back. Her hens didn't like the new one she said, it was just too stressful. Oh well :( Thanks everyone for your input!

Chicken math - To trade or not to trade.

It's done! I gave her my SLW with less white. She gave me the least pretty and least bearded of her three, which is a bit of a bummer, but no big deal. When I was there, she discovered her first eggs! Two small light blue eggs, so pretty! She's not sure which chicken is laying though. I put my...

Chicken math - To trade or not to trade.

Interesting! My SLWs are almost always together, and the same is usually true of my Aussies and orps. Though I think not as much as the wyandottes. One more of Kerrigan. Pretty stoked that she is a she :D

Here are a few more australorp pics. Not great, I know. I can try again if need be. From that first pic on the thread, would you guess that they're all hens? Could I have been so lucky? Haha

Chicken math - To trade or not to trade.

The hard part is choosing which to trade! If I get rid of one SLW or aussie, will their counterpart get sad?

Chicken math - To trade or not to trade.

My neighbor has three 17week old Easter egger pullets. I have 3 buff Orpingtons, 2 silver lace wyandottes and a columbian Wyandotte, 2 australorps, a barred rock and a faverolle. All 15-17 weeks old. I'm pretty sure an austrolorp is a roo, and possibly also a SLW. Since all of my neighbors...

My chickens suck at foraging bugs...

The subject line says it all. I don't know if it's because they were in a brooder so long or what, but my chickens don't have a big interest in bugs. I'll call them all close and flip over a log or brick for them to enjoy the smorgasbord of creepy-crawlies underneath. After some sideways glances...

    Sweet lone faverolle, bullied.

She was raised with the rest, I got them all as hatchlings. They all have at least one more of their breed, she's the only single. She always been very timid, and was often off by herself even in the brooder. And she has NEVER eaten from my hand :[

    Sweet lone faverolle, bullied.

This is my 3 month salmon faverolle, Medusa. She's the only faverolle in my mixed flock of 10, ages ranging from 2-3 months. When I got her, I hadn't heard of her breed, and knew nothing of their temperaments. Honestly I just got her because the name was so interesting. They free range in the...

    The Silver Laced Wyandotte Thread

I've got two SLWs and a columbian. I'm pretty sure the columbian is a pullet just based on her behavior, but I'm not so sure about the other two. #1 we call raptor and #2 we call Bellatrix. I read that roos will have a blunt tail while pullets will have a pointed tail, which would make #1 a roo...
