Hi everyone,
One of our hens currently has almost no feathers on the top of her head, or on her shoulders. We have her in a chicken saddle, which seems to be helping a bit (no visible cuts or anything, just the missing feathers). She is the only hen who has needed this. She does not avoid the...
Thank you. I think she was the most connected I've ever felt to a chicken. She would run up to me whenever I opened the door and sit right on my shoulder. She was an oddball but also a little bit smarter and more personable from the other birds from the get-go. As a chick she would jump right...
Hey all, thanks so much for the help. We did try to do what we could last night and order some medication but she unfortunately passed away over the night.
So, the poop itself has looked pretty normal. She has had issues with poop sticking around her vent, but she's had that problem for quite a while. I am currently not home (I'm actually at uni now, I'm posting this for my dad). He says the vent appears "goopy."
Should we try feeding a Tums...
Hey all,
One of my hens appeared especially lethargic today (seemed totally fine yesterday). Lots of standing still with her eyes closed, and little interest in food. When her eyes are open, they do appear bright, and she is responsive to gentle pokes. It's pretty cold here (23 F), so I've...
This is Peanut Hamper. I call her Pee Pee. She's (mostly) a cream legbar, and is very intelligent, but a little bit odd.
Pee Pee's most major oddity is that she has terrible aim. If I hold up a mealworm, she will miss at least five times before actually fitting it into her beak. The lack of...
Hi all,
Unfortunately, it looks like that a bird that was sold to me as a pullet is actually a young roo. Oops! I know pretty much nothing about keeping roosters, but I'm not necessarily opposed to keeping him -- he is a stunning Ermine Ameraucana. Thing is, we only have 4 birds and they are...
Yes, she's adorable!! I'll try not to worry about it too much & will start giving her vitamins. She's definitely my favorite bird. Super super friendly with people, and since she was a chick she will perch on your arm like a hawk.
Thanks, I'll give that a shot. If neurological, do the problems tend to worsen over time?
Her eyes look bright & clear to me. I'm not an expert, though, and could definitely be missing something.
Hey all,
I recently started a flock of four: two pullets brooded by a friend, two pullets bought from a local farmer. Integration seemed to go really well in the first few days. The hens were sleeping together on the roost almost immediately & there has been no major conflict (no pecking...
Thanks so much for all the info, everyone! Looks like I will skip the quarantine this time around and just make sure to do a good check of each hen for general health & presence of parasites before I put them all together. Appreciate the idea of adding clutter to the run when I intro -- I hadn't...
Yup, they are all similar ages! Would folks usually do a quarantine when merging two pairs together into a flock for the first time, or is that more of a standard for introducing birds to an established flock?
Hi all!
I am going to introduce 4 hens to an empty coop later this month. 2 hens were brooded at a friend's, and the other two I am planning to buy off of Facebook around the same time I introduce the first two. I'm curious as to what the proper protocol is for forming a new flock from two...
Wild birds cannot get through the fence wire. We've got a fully enclosed run with hardware cloth stapled to a wooden frame, and there's bricks underneath the frame so nothing can dig a hole beneath it as well. Maybe a wild bird pooped into the water supply or something...?
No scabs on the...
Thanks so much for the info. You've really been an absolutely huge help in dealing with this situation and I appreciate you taking your time to advise.
So, I just did a very thorough check of the other hen's throat and it looks like she might have a small amount of the same white growth as...
