Hi guys!
I used to be a little more activeon this site back when I lived in Maine with my own chickens... but I've lived here in Texas (Midland) for nearly a year and a half. We're finally buying our own house on nearly three acres, and I'm totally going to have chickens again.
I'm thinking...
It looks like we may have to clean the pond a bit before we get ducks... do you know anything about pond maintenance? Lol. Also, do they get along with fish?
Thanks!! I'm thinking of maybe modifying our shed a little to make a little coop/roost area for the chickens. I'll definitely keep you...
I'll definitely have to check out the duck forum! Even though I've had chickens, I've never had ducks. I'm pretty excited to get them, though! Do you keep yours for eggs, meat, or just because they're fun?
Mud isn't a new thing to me, fortunately, haha. Maine is absolutely nasty in mud...
This is good to hear. I don't tend to baby my chickens anyway, since we were never able to get electricity out to my old coop in Maine. All I was able to do was shovel the snow out of their pen and put bag balm on their frostbitten combs.
What sort of things can I do to help them acclimate to...
Hi guys. I'm new to Texas, though not to chickens. I'm moving down to Midland this April to be with my boyfriend, and we just got a house on nine acres. I can't wait to fill it up with chickens, but... I know nothing about the climate out here. I'm from Maine, so I'm used to heavy, hardy...
Hello, folks. I haven't dropped in for a while now, oops. My job and class have been keeping me busy. I barely have time to breathe!
Anyone interested in a free rooster? Benedict is getting to be too aggressive for my little flock. He might benefit from more girls or more space. He's a leghorn...
I went out again last night and took each leghorn and shoved them under Chewbacca... this morning, I went out to check them again, and they were all in a pig pile together! I guess everyone accepted each other! :)
I bought some chicks to give my broody today. They were slightly different ages-- five ten-day old leghorns, and two four-day old Polish Cresteds.
I didn't realize how big the ten-day olds would be. I managed to stick the two little Polish chicks under Chewbacca (my broody), but the leghorns...
Today is day 21. This was just a clutch of bad luck. Turns out, my chickens were eating the eggs whenever my broody got up. I had only four eggs left by the time I caught on and put her (and the eggs) in a crate. Now, only 1 is viable.
Please, little chickie, hatch. Cockerel or pullet, I'll...
So frustrated!! My poor broody's eggs are going missing. We started with 13 eggs, and over the course of a week, 5 disappeared. No sign of shells, it's like they vanished. My coop is very tight, and I don't see anywhere that a rat could get in. Any ideas? No sign of any hurt chickens.
In other...
Her eggs are all marked. :) Good thing, too, because she's still stealing every egg she can find. And I get lucky enough to get pecked at while I steal my eggs back, lolol. I wish there was a chicken math class that I could sign her up in!
Lovely girls!! Why did your first broody almost kill...
I put some eggs under my silkie yesterday! Aaaand she's still stealing everyone else's eggs, lol.
I think my due date is around April 30th? Or May 1st? Something like that, I think. This is my first time trying to get chicks. :)
Well, I took a plunge! Chewbacca (my silkie) went broody again. This time, I ordered some silkie hatching eggs a few days ago, and they should be arriving today! Assuming all goes according to plan, I'll have my first round of chicks before long! Should I provide the chicks with their own...
