So these were sold to me by tractor supply as spitzhaubens. Clearly the only viable candidate is Esther there on the far left. The others have cute personalities but are most likely, pardon my candor, mutts???? I'm pretty sure the lighter colored non-Spitz is a non-pullet!
Those are great pictures! The towel backdrop is a nice touch, too!
Are you able to tell if these are female at this stage?
My Esther looks spot on like yours and I'm hoping that she's an Esther not an Esteban.
Here are a couple of updated pictures. So fun watching that hairdo! Very sweet girl (fingers crossed...)
Here are the others (these pics are a little over a week old)
The other gray one that was in the original picture didn't make it sadly. She just didn't grow and finally became very weak...
So here is another shot of the 4 that I bought from Tractor Supply ostensibly as Spitzs. I see the resemblance in one for sure, maybe two. The two buff colored ones tho? They have the best personalities! Any guesses? BTW Anna is the only one who has the mohawk.
Thank you all for the help! I ended up with 4 chicks, two that are the solid buff color and two that look more like the internet images of Spitz chicks. Interestingly enough, only one of the 4 has blue legs. Can't wait to see how they all turn out! You guys are awesome. I love this site!
Hi everyone! Just yesterday I got two chicks (supposedly pullets) so my broody Jersey Black Giant Hazel could foster them. Mine are super young I think; dont have their wing feathers in yet (that's a thing, right?). I've been researching about the breed and mainly see babies that look like they...
Hi, Englishchick! I am certainly no expert, but I ran across the same problem early on. I don't have any roosters so all of my eggs were infertile. Didn't matter to the hen! I looked around for fertile eggs, but didn't really find any viable options (no pun intended). So then I read about...
This year the thing that's made the difference for me has been shadescreen. Long story short it's dropped the temp inside my coop (which is around 9'x9' by about 9' at the peak of the roof) a good 10 degrees. Plus I run a fan straight at the nest boxes during the day and use a couple of fans to...
Your chickens (or dogs for that matter) will love you for scrambling them and serving them for their breakfast. Interesting idea to boil them and use the food processor! Hadn't thought of that.
I agree with oldhen. I've had many experiences with NOT breaking hens from being broody, and unless you want her to hatch or foster for you, nip it in the bud. It just depends on your goals. I live in northern California where we can get heat waves up to 115 degrees and that is what I always...
