can 4.5 week chicks go outside all day

Hi there! Are they mostly feathered? They will let you know if they are too cold .. they'll pipe up and "complain". I would let them if I were you and I don't think that's too long either. :) Seems like your off to a good start anyway!

6 weeks old - Newbie with questions

LOL! Oh I understand migraines very well!! lol It made me giggle so thanks! On top of whatever you take for your head, try 2 aspirin and a Coke. That's my unasked for advise there! :) Yep. Toss those out to them! My silkies LOVE the strawberries. And I have thrown peppers out to them too. Good...

6 weeks old - Newbie with questions

I'll chime in.. I'm on my 3rd flock but there may be others with even more great info for you. 1. At 6 weeks (I am at that stage myself) I think that though it may still be hard to tell with some breeds, I certainly can tell I have for sure 2 roos in my batch and yes, they flare up a bit more...

Some of my mixed flock. We've got granny Easter Egger in there looking over some 6 week old Australorps, another EE, the behind of a Silver Laced Polish (and one by the waterer) and last but not least a nice Silkie front and center.

Switching from Free-Range to a Run

Yes, you're a big softy lol! I think those "pitiful" noises are them just happy to see you!! :) Look at it that way! And maybe they know treats are coming! You have a pleasant set up for them and now one that won't lead to certain death. Good for them and you. And like you said, you can let them...

New Hens, how long should I keep them in the coop?

Hi there. Others will chime in surely, but my advice is that they should be in the coop for a day, and then the next you certainly can allow them in the run. Chickens home fairly easy from what I've read (remember someone saying 3 days), but to err on the side of caution, maybe 5-7 days before...

Only One Chicken Left... Not Sure What to Do

I was just in your position. We had a single chicken (7 yr old Easter Egger) for almost a year - through a cold WI winter by herself. She free-ranged. Hung out with the barn cat, mostly at a distance. Hung out in the garage with my husband when he was in there. Hung out with some wild birds when...

    Are polish chickens, cold hardy?

I'm in Wisconsin and my daughter wanted some, so we got them! Along with 19 other types of chicks & guineas. I am taking my chances! They will free range, but I have a nice coop with a run for the winter that I'll throw in some straw etc.. for fun, but I think with the body heat from the other...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Can I ask about boiling your fresh eggs here or should I go over to the food thread? I have to make some deviled eggs and I've only once tried to hard boil these suckers, which was quite the fun! Anyone have a good idea for me or should I head over there?

Huh, go figure about my man. I will have to let him know he may know a thing or two! Thanks again Bee! I feel much better about what I knew I wanted to do! I hear/read you loud and clear on all this. So glad we have someone we can go to for things like this. I do have gut feelings about a...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Not to interupt your lovely thoughts of homesteading without all the fine luxuries (which I do love reading about) , but I do have a question ... or maybe more of an approval or not. I have 3 acres of a hobby farm in a rural area surrounded by farm fields with a few houses on our country road...
