I thought I would share a few observations about my nesting boxes. I have 2 nesting boxes for 7 chickens. I had originally planned to split them to have 4, but I was struggling with the design and then they started laying. At first, the girls were only using one box and 2 girls were laying on...
Although I can't speak to the scientific discussion here, I can share some real-world results from my first year of chickening. Our coop/run has fences on 3 sides that are about 8 feet and 1 side at 6 feet. We have 3 EE and 4 buffs. At about 12 weeks, one of the EE started to escape. I watched...
From the very first day that we got our chicks (they were 1 day old,) we left the light on all day and off all night. They "fussed" a little for the first night and then never again. As Blooie mentions, the are outside critters that don't need night-time light to be happy.
We got 4 buffs from a very reliable breeder. 90% sexing accuracy but not guaranteed. We have 1 chick who is much smaller than the rest. She still eats, drinks, and interacts fine, so we haven't worried about it. Just a late bloomer or petite, we say.
We have 7 chicks in a large tote. I started out worrying a bunch about temperature and I haven't any more. They are just over 3 weeks old. 4 buff orpingtons and 3 ameracaunas. They have been in my shed in Utah for a week now with no problems. 1 heat lamp at night to keep the temperature in the...
I'm sure that there are lots of opinions about this. I've liked the wood shavings. The chicks started digging around at day 6 (hence all of the wood in the waterer.) I don't think that would work with paper towels very well. Also, they have spilled the water numerous times as well. I only paid...
Although my daughter and I are rookies, we now have 8 days of experience and I thought I would share a few observations. I thought some of these items might be helpful to someone else.

Since we are in Utah and it...
Howdy,
My name is Mike. My daughter and I have been researching and preparing for chickens for some months now. I've gathered lots of information, but thought it was time to chime in and share a few things.
My daughter is 12 and this chicken experience has been great. We spent tons of time...
