Hey all,
My small flock is almost 11 months old--6 hens, all laying, and health wise, so far so good. I'm noticing, however, that Evy, my biggest girl (and most dominant, generally) has a bald spot on her back end. The visible skin looks fine, no injuries or signs of distress that I can see...
Thank you--that's a great idea! These are my first chickens and I'm learning as I go. The mama in me wants to indulge them but that gets to be a slippery slope. :)
Hello!
My 8 month old birds are on layer feed with a handful of this or that tossed into their run for fun. But during this recent cold spell, I've been bringing them extra stuff--warm oats or grits, cooked ground meat, whatever I've got going in the kitchen--and they've loved it. Trouble is...
I could have written some of this post. :) I have 18 week Orpingtons (different colors) and they're all sweet natured and enjoy affection. My Buff girl is always jumping into my lap and pressing herself against me. Other chickens might jump up and occupy space on other parts of my legs and she...

These are my two Buff Orpington chicks at 4 weeks old (I have five others in different colors. I’m starting to think I’ve got a rooster. Everyone says it’s too early to tell. But Jane (second pic) is feistier than the others, has this larger comb, shorter tail, and I swear I heard her try to...
Hello All!
My husband and I (brand new to the chicken game) are working on the site for our chicken run. There's a lot of clay soil, heavy and uneven, and we're trying to get it level. We're hoping to use sand and wood chips as the base of our run, but could we put down a layer of gravel over...
Hi all! Brand new member here, and I picked up seven chicks last week from Mt. Healthy. I bought an Insta Brooder with a heat plate (Amazon) and its been working out well but the girls are growing and I'll have to come up with roomier accommodations before too long--projected date to move...
