    Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

I would like the rare breeds, more along the lines of the dark brown egg layers. I like the RIR, but really love the look of the Black Copper Marans, and the Sumatra. I will save for the rare collection, come winter/spring.And maybe and Easter Egger for a splash of color! I was asking because I...

    My Cornish X experiment

I had a few white bundles that needed differentiating at the early weeks. I used edible food dye on their backs. Just reapplied as it wore off. No noticeable harm done... I have 6 meats ready for the freezer, need to find a good place to have it done.

    Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

So Mayers is a good place to purchase chicks. Are their flocks 'pure'? By this I mean not much variation to the breeds. I am by no means going into the showing my girls (other than on here), but I would like the birds to be very characteristic to the breed. And I wish to hatch my own chicks from...

    "Nature Smart" chicken feed...

Ok. So after all the back and forth by these two, did we get a good answer to the question? I, too, am looking for a good feed with genetically modified organisms. I feel ok with feeding less nutritional feed because I supplement their feed.... Right now I am going back and forth between Dumor...

No rooster, but 'spot' in yolks.

Hi All! Some one may have already brought this up. As far as I know, I have no rooster. When I crack an egg, I see the telltale white spot in the yolk. Either I never really learned what to look for or there is a roo' in the hen house!! Obviously at 10PM, I am not cooking eggs, LOL. When I crack...

    Deep litter method

Ok. I am starting my larger coop soon. I commandeered my shed for the coop and feed storage. I, too, am wanting to do the deep litter method. My brother is willing to save all his shavings from cutting wood. He keeps 'clean' shavings separate from the 'dirty' shavings; wood with glues like...

How often do you add ACV to the water?

Any other comments? I know I read some others on other threads, just for the life of me can not find them. Going to start my flock on it tonight, and would like more information on it. Thanks.

    Broody Hen Thread!

Marking the eggs won't hurt them? I gave my hen two eggs yesterday and now there are 6.... Hmmmm!

    Eggs and extreme heat

I am having the same opposite kind of question. I live in the north east and it is winter. I was not home for about three days and have just picked up 24 eggs from my girls. How long do they last ? My house sitter did not collect eggs, scared of the chickens......

    Dumb Question about Meat Birds

So. To recap: Buy broilers specifically for meat. They are ready for butchering between 8 & 12 weeks, some sooner. Feed enough to grow, but also allow to forage (free range) for themselves. I only ask this because I will be looking to buy for the spring. I have 9 hens and 2 roos right now for...

Free Range or Not? What Does Everyone Prefer?

I am lucky to live in a suburban/rural area. It is a small community and in this community there are 3-4 (including me) chicken owners. I have a large property by community standards and I let my flock roam the property. They are smart little beings. Three visited the neighbor one day and were...

How soon after Roo and Hen make their 'connection' do I see eggs?

I am seeing varying color in the combs, so I am assuming they are differing maturity levels, also. For those asking what breed I have; my son is holding one in my avatar pic.
