My brooder plates have been damaged and it's not in the budget to get new ones at this time.

    Mixing Ages

I need some guidance. I know it's standard advice to only mix chicks of a 2 week age gap.....that said I have one large sized brooder, in it are 17 - 2 and 4 week old chicks. I now have 12 hatchlings and I'd love if I could mix them and not divide up the space. I've raised up to 57 chicks at a...

    Managing Broody Hens

Shoot. I really only have the one safe place and kennels aren't cheap...eventually, in the new barn (being built this year) we will have multiple broody hen pens, but that doesn't help now.

    Managing Broody Hens

That's what I'm worried about. I don't have anything like that. I also found another hen sitting in the milk house. I think I have to remove some eggs, there's a ton in there, but I'm not sure how long they've been setting or anything. Would they actively attack other chicks? Or only if the...

    Managing Broody Hens

Hey everyone! I have 3 broody hens, all in separate places. Only one is in a safe place for chicks to hatch. Another is in a predator safe space, but not suitable for hatching (milk crate inside the chickshaw) and the final is in an old mill house on our property, I thought this girl was...

    Wing Clipping

For some reason I'm just now seeing all these. Thank you for your responses. I'll have to check them out one of these nights. We also just found a spot where they're getting out in the fence. So that's a problem too. It's an area that was never meant to be permanent.

    Wing Clipping

We will be culling 4 of the cockerels as soon as it's warm enough. We should have 40-45 hens/pullets to 6 cockerels and one very fine rooster.

    Wing Clipping

They didn't molt this year, they're just 7 months old. I know I have to clip my older hens, but they seem to be staying in. I've also wondered if it's because my Cockerel to pullet ratio is a little off and they're stressed out. I just hate knowing they're not fully protected by the fence and...

    Wing Clipping

A few months ago I clipped my young pullets' wings, for a while things seemed okay, but now several of them are getting out. Yesterday my husband watched one easily flying from the ground over our 7ft fence, so they are not using any of the structures inside to assist them. Mostly it's my Buff...

    Khaki Campbell/Welsh Harlequin and Cayugas

Thanks everyone! My pullets are all starting to lay, so I'm getting eager for these ladies! We have a pole light near them, so everyone is getting some extra light now. It's not very bright, but I've noticed a difference since it got fixed

    Khaki Campbell/Welsh Harlequin and Cayugas

I have three khaki Campbell / Welsh Harlequin ducks, however they could be whole bread khaki Campbell's seeing that both drakes were on site. (I hatched these) They are 24 weeks old and I have not found any eggs yet. Being January in Indiana I am wondering if they will start laying? Or if they...

    Homing Free Rangers to Chickshaw

It's a basic 40lb galvanized feeder (open top, coned into a pan), but the ceiling of the chickshaw is the "lid" I referred to in my post. We have to lift the lid to access the feeder, if it were suspended we wouldn't be able to lift it. They are usually fed outside on a pan, which works much better.

    Homing Free Rangers to Chickshaw

It's not suspended, there's no way to do so.

    Homing Free Rangers to Chickshaw

This is one of the things I have been concerned about. They've actually been quite good, so my "frequently" statement was a bit misleading, today and yesterday were the hard days, but they seemed to actually be really good to each other. They are fast and ate well. I surveyed them today when I...
