I certainly wouldn't think a flock would "slow down" a hawk. But its definitely a boost in security to be within range of a rooster who has a good eye for birds of prey and a loud alert call. This is what I'm worried she's missing out on when she wanders to find me. She does have plenty of...
Even when she's separated herself from the flock? I worry that I'd be sacrificing her to the hawks, she's a touch smaller than her sisters. But I guess in the long term its better she learns now to stay with the flock and stop wandering. I just hope she learns fast!

Little late on the reply but I dont want to get booted for not posting for like 6 years! I stopped being a backyard chicken owner for the past 6 years but this year im back at it! I got my own property, a fiance who also loves chickens, and a hand-me-down coop from family. Heres a pic of the...
Some background info;
I have 4 leghorn hens and one sweet crossbreed rooster. This rooster isn't just any rooster, this is a hand picked ladies man. He was picked out of 7 other roosters for his dedication and kindness to the hens, and he does not disappoint. At least, he doesn't disappoint me...
I've tried to get my dad, who lives right next door, to do it. But he refuses to do it. I don't know anybody else who can. I wish I could end it for her, but it's not possible.
At least she'll die with watermelon and strawberry in her stomach, and surrounded by hay in a warm safe environment...
Val is passing. As I was preparing to bathe the remaining poop and blood off of her, I found a problem I hadn't noticed before. It seems the stuck poop was the big issue the whole time. She has a massive infection on/in her cloaca. Lots of maggots. She is barely conscious now, and is close to...
I'll probably post pictures later today after I get her cleaned. Feeding her eggs is a great idea! I'm going to spoil the hell out of her today, see if I can get her energy up further.
I'll call my vet and see if they can do that. We do have very good feed stores in my area that would definitely stock a variety of medicines a d treatments.
Something got her. I don't know what. The only thing that I can think of is a rat, because the coop is very secure. Thank you for thinking of her! She's is my favorite chicken out of the flock and has always been friendly to me. Once upon a time she was at the top of the pecking order! Sad to...
I would love to get her wormed and check for parasites and other health issues, but the only vet around who treats chickens will charge 200$ for the appointment alone... Once she's eating well I can put diatomaceous earth in her food to treat any possible parasitic infection.
Her abdomen feels...
She is sleeping normally, and also preening herself this morning! But she is having extreme difficultly walking and balancing. I've check out her legs and nothing seems broken or injured. I'm hoping it will go away if she heals. But I worry it might be neurological and permanent.
She is separated . She's actually in the very same wire cage that she was kept in the first week of her life with me! If she recovers, I will probably build a mini-coop (LOL) I have another senior chicken, Norma, who could benefit from being in a separate coop will Val.
I'm just glad I got her...
Thank you! I'll give a gentle bath tomorrow if she's still doing well. Her wound is where half of her comb used to be. The back half of her comb is missing and there is a crater where it used to be. Thats the only wound I can see. I'm worried she has a brain injury because of the bleeding from...
