    electric netting

Are you going to keep the fence stationary for the entire time? If not, one of the challenges when you have just one piece of fence is how to set it up in a new spot when the birds are running around all over. Having two fences lets you set up another fence adjacent to the one the chickens are...

    electric netting

I raised 50 freedom rangers in my yard in one 80' (i think) premier fence. I think the fencing worked great. I saw a family of foxes in my yard two days before I put the chickens out and had no losses from predation. I ran my fence on a lawn tractor battery, switched for a charged up one once a...

    freedom rangers

Got 51 ranger chicks this summer, brought 50 to slaughter. Pastured in electric netting. Very happy with weights, taste, texture! These are REAL chickens.

Our First Experience with Meat Birds

Just wondering about your processor, what area are you from? Mind giving the processors info? Thanks!

    How noisy are meaties?

One or two of my freedom rangers are crowing at about 8 weeks, but it's a half-hearted practice crow. Nothing like a full grown rooster. They are fairly close to the house, 50 ft maybe, but it hasn't bothered me or waken the kids yet.

Transporting The Meaties to Their Doom

I thought I'd do the same with a trailor and tarp. Then reading around here it seems like it might not be a good idea. I'm raising freedom rangers and they are FAST at 8.5 weeks old. I know I'd have trouble catching them without loosing some or taking up a bunch of the processors time. Instead...

Freedom Ranger experience and feed #s

Thanks for all the info. Do you give grit? I put some out recently to see if they would take it. It took them a week to eat maybe a cup and a half. For 50 chickens, that seems like not much grit per chicken. I've read many people think they get enough grit from the ground, always being on fresh...

Freedom Ranger experience and feed #s

I've just kept feed available at all times in two 30lb feeders, so I felt like I couldn't let it get wet because it might not get eaten right away. How do you judge how much to give them each day if you want it to be gone that day? Just trial and error? If it's raining all day, like yesterday...

Freedom Ranger experience and feed #s

Do you just put the trough feeders outside? What do you do when it rains? Do you worry about them pooping in the food, cleaning feeders constantly? I wanted to do trough feeders because I could build them with scrap, but I'm new at this and was scarred of the food getting wet. I thought they...

Freedom Ranger experience and feed #s

Thanks for the info, what do you kind of feeders do you feed with? I'm using two 30lb hanging feeders inside the shelter. This works well with little waste, but feeding them outside would be easier for me, and give the chickens more room, which they could probably use. Also, My chickens have...

Freedom Ranger experience and feed #s

Thanks for posting your FR experience. I have 50 6 weeks olds now. I'm also raising them in electric netting. I built an a-frame out of 2x4 and put tyvek house wrap over it as a roof. I was just wondering what kind of shelter you use on pasture. I'm doing this for the first time and just trying...

Transport to the processor-make a crate?

What is the proper height for a crate? Can the bottom be chicken wire or should it be a smaller opening mesh like 1/2"?

    Adjustable auto chicken waterers (nipples)

Hmm, maybe my problem was low pressure then, caused by not bleeding the tube, fittings and PVC properly. Could an air bubble somewhere cause low pressure? The same nipples are not leaking now that they are mounted in the bottom of the bucket.

    Adjustable auto chicken waterers (nipples)

I can see how that could happen, and I thought about that in relation to my setup, but I had it setup in my garage with the water bucket about 2 feet higher than the nipples. My guess is that if you got into the science of hydraulics, you would find that the pressure at the end of the 3/8" hose...
