Just wondering about peoples thoughts on the differences between the Australian standard and the one we follow here in North America. How do you feel about trying to "get back" to the Australian profile? And would that mean reintroducing some black Orpington for tail set?
What an excellent idea! Iknow that it can be intimidating attempting to learn about our breeds from these wonderful people with their wealth of knowledge, especially with sayings like "chicken mommy" and "backyard flock keepers" out there. But a thread like this will help those of us just...
Looking for some help with determining if I have two boys and one girl, or the other way around. Not great picture, but best I could get right now. Two are very similar, much more feathered in, faces are coloring in, quite a but darker overall especially on wing joint. The other one isn't as...
Just checking in here to sit quietly and learn as much as I can. I may be a "backyard flock keeper" for the moment, but want to learn and develop so I can help promote the breed with good stock here in nova Scotia. Great to see some pics to show what I should be looking for!
No, that was actually "coop Mark I". Lol. Since then they have moved into a 10x14 shed with a 20x20 run and free ranging time every day. They have a couple Hidey places and no blood is drawn. They seem a but better today. Big girls aren't actually picking on little ones today, but the little...
Almost a week and a half ago my three black Australorps pullets and one cockerel went out to the coop with my 9 leghorns. The little guys stayed in a separate pen within the coop where they could be seen by the big girls, but not gotten to. Today we let them all mingle together and I am scared...
My two favorite Australorps about 8 weeks old. The cockerel somehow managed to lose a toe two days ago, but is running around and ruling the introduction pen again today!
Awesome, thank you. If I posted some pics could I get an opinion on decent breeding stock? Im not necessarily looking for show quality, but good solid stock that stays basically true to the breed. I have one little girl and one little boy that my admittedly untrained eye really likes the look...
We got them from some local people who were moving and couldn't keep them anymore. 9 leghorns and "fingers". The lady wasn't sure of the breed, but said to just take her or she would have to be put down.
We call her fingers for obvious reasons, poor thing. She was thrown in when we got our white leghorns and I didn't have the heart to say no. She does great despite the deformity even digging for yummy worms. She's bantam sized, lays a light brown small egg almost every day, and I don't know if...
Hi all. I am new to the breed and I have tried searching back in the thread, but it is very daunting (604 pages...whooo). I am hoping someone could compile a list of characteristics for the breed that newbies like me could look for. I guess I'm looking for something a but more specific than...
