HELP! Silkie Rooster to hen ratio

My silkies are about 15 weeks and one of them is significantly bigger than the other. We think Ethel is an Ethan since he/she has been crowing but doesn’t do it every morning. At first I thought the silkie picked up the habit from my other girls who are older and like to yell at me if I don’t...

Run size for 6 chickens in MI

We have 6 chickens, two of which are silkies. The original plan was to free range but that is no longer an option for us. So now we are wanting to build a covered run. We are thinking 6 ft wide, 10 ft long. Does that seem like enough space?

Help! Injured foot on Bantam chick

Thank you so much! The more I think about it, I’m almost thinking we picked it up this way. Because I remember thinking the foot looked weird but again I’d never owned a bantam before so I was uncertain. I will keep monitoring it!

Help! Injured foot on Bantam chick

We purchased this group of chicks older instead of getting day old chicks because we wanted to get them in the coop sooner with the current chicks we have out there. They are still skittish when we reach in the brooder and tend...

Help! Injured foot on Bantam chick

We just picked up four new chicks from Family Farm and Home on Sunday. I noticed yesterday something was weird on the foot of one of the bantams we picked up but our new chicks are very skittish and run the minute we reach for them. I didn’t want to stress them out more so I waited to get them...

    Starlight Green Egger

Do you free range your SGE’s or are they kept in a coop and run? We just picked one up as a chick and are rethinking free ranging the flock after two of our birds were attacked.

    Chick grit and Coop time

It’s been sunny and between the low to mid 80’s. I plan to just take them out for a few hours and bring them back in. Here’s a picture of our set up. We are going to get them a bigger run but this is what we have for now. They will also have free range of the yard and we plan to only put them...

    Chick grit and Coop time

New chicken mom here! We have a little bit of a range of age between our 4 chicks with the oldest being somewhere between 5-6 weeks and the youngest being around 3 weeks. We’ve never had an issue with plucking or jumping on each other or pecking order between the ages either. The older one...
