our goal was merely fresh eggs (urban backyard coop) but then I quickly realized the birds had a lot of personality and quite a few of them were actually pet-level friendly. Now it is enjoying the charm/absurdity of their behavior, encouraging their fun antics and getting eggs out of the deal.
Heracles has a "disastrously fashionable" molt - it elongates her neck but the feathers around her chest and then head are kinda supermodel-ish. LOL, she's kinda rocking this molt business.
poor Alice! her molt is gloriously awful but she seems to hold her head high nonetheless in anticipation of a crown! Winning a 2020 Worst Molt contest is an especially Epic Disaster title so good luck to this Araucana contender!
Some cold-weather, electricity-free strategies when we lived in IL winters:
* Cracked corn in the evening before they go to sleep!! - the work to digest the corn generates some metabolic heat for the birds
* we gave them warm (gently hot) oatmeal in the morning made with milk and greek yogurt...
I understand your concern... This is the first night in the coop for my 6 RIRs (11 wks old) and I'm about sick with nerves. They were cheeping and freaking out, in typical fashion, and the anxiety spread right to me. The 3 BR (6wks) got whooped on by the queen Red so they're still inside for...
I gave mine (6 RIR @ 3wks then) some finely mashed hard boiled eggs from my hand and it was a feeding frenzy. But now at 4 wks they won't touch newly introduced dried mealworms, yogurt or mashed bananas. I hope they grow out of it, I was looking forward to future fun with a variety of scrap...
I hadn't heard of cecal poo but I'm glad to hear it's nothing abnormal or indicative of disease. I've seen quite a bit of this today (6 Rhode Island Reds, est 3-4 wks old) and while I'll still keep checking & cleaning frequently, at least I won't be as actively worried about it. That being said...
I am a chicken novice but I already check on my girls obsessively (including 3:30am wake ups - no alarms needed other than the one in my head that insists there could be some terrible predicament in the brooder nursery I must fix…). I've also asked my husband to install a monitoring device (baby...
My husband & I talked about chickens for a couple years and finally decided to act, so we just bought 6 Rhode Island Red pullets two days ago. I suspect they are around 2wks old based on size, wing/tail feather (just started on the tail) and ability of 1 brave little aviator to fly up to the...
