^thanks for the response. i'm thinking you're right, probably won't be effective enough to melt all the snow unless i had the heating cables close enough together and that would be cost prohibitive.
the fence walls on my run are 8 feet tall (plastic lattice on lumber frame) and i have come...
I'm improving our coop run to help keep out predators. Currently just have chicken wire stretched across to keep the hawks out, but going to upgrade to hardware cloth or welded wire to make it more secure. Mesh will be screwed to top of lumber supports, 8' x 8' spans.
I'm wondering about...
Anyone have any leads on where to find egg-ready pullets in the Chicagoland area?
We just lost all but one of ours to a raccoon slaughter. After trapping & security improvements we need new tenants. We will get some chicks again next spring, just looking for 2-3 for now to give the sole...
I guess i should say it is just the "default". In the case of Dupage county, it is written into the code:
37-403.5: - USES NOT SPECIFICALLY PERMITTED IN DISTRICT/PROHIBITED.
Except as hereinafter provided, when a use is not specifically listed as a permitted or conditional use in any specific...
i think the consensus is that you can have chickens in unincorporated Dupage if:
1) you have 5+ acres and can be classified as "ag"
2) you have 40k sq ft (~1+ acre) and are in the 4H program
OR
3) you have less than a acre, your neighbors are cool and you don't get caught
chickens are not...
This is debatable. Chickens (and ducks) are not expressly prohibited by Dupage Co. Code, but not expressly allowed either. By strict letter of the law this probably means NO (per zoning regs, if something is not allowed then it is prohibited). But unincorporated is also something of a Don't...

Good thought, but i'm guessing it won't work. Definition (below) says it should "typically" spend a "majority" of its time in a dwelling unit (ie, your house). You could argue that some outside dogs don't meet this criteria - but most dogs do, and zoning laws are most often...
if she is withing the city/village boundary, she must adhere to the proposed city/village ordinance (if passed). county land use laws and ordinances apply to unincorporated areas, so it is immaterial in this case.

that's disappointing, to say the least. if your neighbors aren't complaining now, hopefully once you're incorporated the village will take the same lackadaisical stance on enforcement.
it still baffles me that they are claiming that anything not expressly permitted in the zoning regs...

that is disappointing. were they able to point to a specific ordinance that you are violating? or did they just say it is not an allowed use in residential zoning?
by the way, here are the only mentions of 4-H in the County Code.
Definition of 4-H project:
4-H PROJECT: Any project conducted by a 4-H member who has been officially enrolled in the appropriate project by the 4-H organization or a project approved by the DuPage County agricultural extension...
yeah, some villages/counties have permit exemptions under a certain square footage. not DuPage. they told me, "if you can step foot in it you need a permit". (technically, you also need a permit for a fence, a brick path, etc, etc).
You might want to ask the employee from the Econ Dev Dept...
DG says you can have 4 chickens, but they have to be set back 50 ft from all property lines. I'm assuming you can't meet that requirement?
As far as proving prior legality, the first step would be to show that the structure is legal. Did you get a permit when you built the coop? If not, I'm...
