    Seeking Pullets Near Central Maryland

Advice would be welcome—thanks! In this circumstance, however, the hens were free-ranging while we were inside working, and we think the fox took advantage of the darkening skies due to an impending storm. Our coop (made by Star Ridge Structures out of Lancaster, PA) is just about bullet...

Thanks! I don’t want to believe in ghost roosters—especially that mean S.O.B.!

    Fertilized by a Ghost

I wish I’d taken a picture—and will if I encounter another one. I was busy making breakfast at the time. No, we don’t let them free range—or haven’t for several months. We’re a good half-mile through dense woods from the nearest other chickens, anyhow.

    Fertilized by a Ghost

We have a little flock of year old hens. Up until about two months ago, we had a rooster, but he went to—shall we say—rooster heaven. This past week, I have cracked two eggs that looked for all the world to be fertilized: a little dark red dot trailing a diaphanous white streamer across the...

Problems getting an automatic door to close in a deep litter coop

Thanks! I experimented with putting a section of rounded molding on the door sill today and discovered that is works pretty much as you say. There’s no slot at the bottom of ours, but it’s calibrated to stop when it reaches the sill. It went right back up when it hit the molding. Given this...

Problems getting an automatic door to close in a deep litter coop

Thanks! It’s hearting to know that all of your chickens have remained intact. The manufacturers are probably just erring on the side of caution.

Problems getting an automatic door to close in a deep litter coop

While I’m inclined to coming up with Rube Goldberg solutions to problems—like a compressed air jet triggered by the start of the door’s descent, or a sweeping brush similarly actuated—my sweetheart came up with something that I’m going to try: a sloping board that will dump any chips out in to...

Problems getting an automatic door to close in a deep litter coop

Well, I can adjust it to its minimum (1,500), but the point of the switch is to prevent chopping your chickens in half if they choose to pause in the doorway while it’s coming down.

Problems getting an automatic door to close in a deep litter coop

Sure—here’s an overview of the door, and a closeup of the sill. Edited: Not sure why they uploaded sideways, but I can’t seem to fix this. The top is to the left.

Problems getting an automatic door to close in a deep litter coop

Hi All! We recently purchased a deluxe coop from a company in Lancaster, PA. One of the features I was most excited about was the SmartCoop automatic door. When we kept chickens some years ago in a coop I built, it was a challenge to make sure that the roost box door was closed on Winter...
