Is ascites in older bird treatable or do I need to euthanize?

Thank you, casportpony. I'm just trying to decide if it's worth it to try and do the draining procedure or in your experience with an older bird go ahead and put her down? I don't want her to suffer too long if there is not much I can do. She is the only hen still living from my very first...

Is ascites in older bird treatable or do I need to euthanize?

I believe my 4 year old Dominique hen has ascites (huge swollen and squishy abdomen, feels like its filled with fluid maybe). I called and talked to a vet at the NC State (we are in central NC) lab that does necropsy and he said it was probably cancer and that in an older bird that has the fluid...

What sex are my Bourbon Red turkeys? (almost 20 weeks)

Thanks, everyone. My hubby took these pictures :) I used them on my blog for one of the posts so they are easy to post up somewhere else too. The turkeys coloring has definitely gotten darker and richer as the weeks go on. They are turning out really pretty in their feathering. I'm not sure...

What sex are my Bourbon Red turkeys? (almost 20 weeks)

Okay, thanks. Hmmm......was not expecting to have all hens. Hopefully I can find a BR tom turkey somewhere close by! I'd love to save a pair for breeding.

What sex are my Bourbon Red turkeys? (almost 20 weeks)

Hello fellow turkey friends, We are trying to figure out the sex of our three Bourbon Red turkeys. At first we thought we had one tom and two hens because one is slightly larger than the other, but now they all look so much alike it's hard to tell! All of them have that thin line of feathers...

My turkeys will not leave me alone!!

Haha! Well, it's good to know this is just a phase and perhaps they will grow out of it somewhat. It's fine some of the time, but it gets annoying after a while especially when I'm trying to spend time with the chickens and handle them. It's pretty crazy how comfortable they are around us!

My turkeys will not leave me alone!!

Our turkeys are CONSTANTLY following us around barking and chatting at us, want to be right up underneath our feet (I feel like I'm tripping over them), curiously peck all over us and hop in our laps anytime we are sitting down outside, crowd us and are all up in our faces when we are trying to...

It's official, we aren't eating them, they have names.

We got our Bourbon Red turkeys for meat too and are planning to process at least one or two but now it is going to be SO HARD!!!!! We haven't named them or anything, but they are incredible attached to us and always want to be right near us, follow us like puppies and "talk" to and cry for us...

    Heritage Turkey dinner price?

Most of the time I've seen dressed heritage turkeys advertised around here (in NC) for $50 or sometimes $75. I think $50 is actually a pretty reasonable price compared to some other places- these are people selling out in the country and not even in big metropolitan areas where you could get a...

We let our Bourbon Reds hang out with the chickens last night

Awwww that's cute! That's great you don't have any issues with disease. We are going to use some blackhead preventative treatments just in case. Thanks!

We let our Bourbon Reds hang out with the chickens last night

We have been letting our 9-10 week old Bourbon Red turkeys out of their pen for a few minutes at a time for the last couple of weeks. One or two times before we let them explore the yard a little and last night they were around the chickens and chicks much more than they have been before. The...

    BRs- hens or toms?

Hi there! We have four 5-week old Bourbon Red turkey poults and were wondering if you can tell yet if they will turn out to be hens or toms. Two of them have a longer/larger bump above their beaks and the other two have a smaller bump (start of a snood or whatever it is called?) I'm assuming...

Help! 2 poults hatched with gimpy legs!

One of ours had splayed legs like that and couldn't walk well, so we tied a piece of yarn between the legs to hold them close enough together so they couldn't split back apart, and it worked really well. That poult has now had the yarn removed for a couple of weeks and walks perfectly normal!

To clip wings or not to clip?

This is really interesting. Thanks so much for the reply. I'm in NC, and we have them in a pen we made for them outside behind our shed that is partially covered/enclosed. We made a little roosting ladder out of bamboo poles and they just started to roost on it at night (as opposing to laying in...
