Uh oh .. surprise rooster, now worried about ratio

You're correct.. I don't need a rooster and I didn't want one. However, I've grown quite attached to him and the thought of rehoming is unsettling to me. I'd not want to see harm come to him (that's my why to keep him). And I'm told he's a Plymouth Blue Rock and my research seems to confirm it...

Uh oh .. surprise rooster, now worried about ratio

Hi, All Turns out one of my 6 is a roo, so now I'm very concerned about the ratio of 5 hens to him. Their coop is 8'x8' so no issue, of course. Their run is 8'x16' and they are confined (too many predators to free range). I know every rooster and situation can be different, but are my worries...

Chickens staying in the coop suddenly

I do not keep a light on overnight inside the coop.

Chickens staying in the coop suddenly

It is covered and I thought it was clear I wasn’t going to lock them out because I disagreed with that. Sorry if I wasn’t clear.

Chickens staying in the coop suddenly

They do come out if I step into the run. They seem very on alert and run back to the coop door frequently, but they also jump up in me for a bit. It’s new.. they were more relaxed for the past several weeks.

They do have deep bedding so maybe that’s the draw? They hang out inside laying and sometimes digging, sometimes climbing on the roost, sometimes laying under the nesting boxes.

Chickens staying in the coop suddenly

Agreed. I thought it would make things so awful for them if they couldn’t retreat, so I’d never do that.

Chickens staying in the coop suddenly

Hey, all - my small flock of 6 pullets were doing great in their run during the day for weeks, but very suddenly started spending every day all day inside the coop.. today is day 4 of this - they come out to the run only a few times to eat/drink and return right back to the coop (8'x8'). I've...

    Plymouth Blue Rock?

Thank you. I am not absolutely certain of ages, but I understand the blue to be approximately six weeks. In the next pictures I believe 1 (Silver Laced Wyandotte), 3 (Gold Laced Wyandotte), 4 (ISA Brown) and 5 (Buff Orpington) to be approximately 5 weeks, while number 2 (Amberlink) is thought to...

    Plymouth Blue Rock?

I don't know what I'll do.. I only have 5 other birds and they're too young to discern sex yet. If this is a rooster and ends up being the only one, I'll breathe a sigh of relief, BUT the girls won't.. there's only 5 of them.

    Plymouth Blue Rock?

Hi , all. I'm told this is a female Plymouth Blue Rock. She's only about 6 weeks old (we think) so too early to confirm if pullet or cockerel. If she's a Plymouth Blue Rock is that breed sex link? What do you think.. is this a Plymouth Blue Rock?
