The funny part is she left the eggs one day to go eat and I went to look and there was another hen sitting on the. I was surprised and then not a few min later they swapped...

    Marans and EE eggs REALLY difficult to candle. I tried weighing the eggs- even the ones that weren't good were losing weight. So that didn't work for me. The shadows is only way I can check.

    I can rarely see anything. I wait until day 18 for lockdown and then throw out it clear.

    Matt I have 24 in the bator and 10 under my broody hen. This batch is going to my neighbor. I don't need anymore babies this year!! These are orp's, Marans, EE and RIR's. Looking forward to the hatch next weekend in my incubator. The broody hen eggs have a ways to hatch. Just experimenting with...

    I also use a really bright flashlight in a the dark with the egg on a empty toilet paper roll.

    Hi there! The eggs are dark but towards the air sack area you can see the light come thru and see the shadowed area where the chick is. That's the only thing I look for and it works for me. Kristie

    Lucky you Matt!!! I have an exact 50/50 split which I'm thrilled about for my Marans and one roo and 3 hens for my buffs. :-) I'm hatching again in my incubator and my hen is broody. We will see what my hatch rate is with her. Have you hatched using a broody hen? Kristie

    I have to agree Matt. I made the decision to only incubate once a year. Too frustrating!!! I am enjoying the break and moved onto rabbits. :-) Kristie
