My chicks are a little over a month old. They are Cochin/Orpington. I got them from a homesteader friend.
I’m pretty sure this might be a roo, but wanted another opinion. The other 3 are bigger and have definite tails.
Thx
This may be a dumb question but here goes… I’m trying to decide on what kind of coop to make. If you have a hoop tractor, do you leave it in one place during winter and put some sort of floor layering in it? (e.g., sand, straw, pellets, shavings, etc.)
I have had chickens and ducks before, but it didn’t work out. This time I’m determined to do everything right.
My hubby says I can get some chicks for my bday. I think I’ll start with 3-4 this time.
They are Cochin/Orpington.
I love sitting in the yard with them and watching their antics.

Thanks for all the responses. I had her put down today. Vet said there was definitely something neurological going on. I now need to decide how to proceed with the remaining 3 girls that I have. 2 silkies and one buff orpington. They seem fine for now, but I'm wondering how long that will last...
I bought them from a private party, so don't know their history. As far as I know they have not been vaccinated. I also started with 3 Buff Orpingtons from a hatchery and only have one left. I guess I will call my local vets and see if they treat chickens. I feel so discouraged and like I'm just...
One of my 20 week old silkies injured her leg jumping from coop to the run. At least that's what I think happened. She started with just a limp, and is now dragging her leg. I can't feel anything wrong or out of place anywhere, and there aren't any lesions or sores or anything. She seems strong...
I finally got more pics of little Emmy tonight. The first pic is like scabs at the base of feathers. None of the other chicks have any signs of this. We haven't seen any picking, she's eating, drinking, etc. We haven't seen any signs of mites or other critters.
We're in the process of finishing up a chain-link dog run for the run attached to the shed for the coop. We put up the chain link, then 1/2" hardware cloth up 4 feet all around. My question is, will chicken wire work for the skirting around the run, or do I also need to use hardware cloth there...
Now that you mention it, sometimes she is off roosting alone, other times she's in with the rest. Maybe I should isolate for a bit? She's a cuddler.
They are outside in a 3 x 6 x 4 ft run during the day. Weather is mid to upper 80s.
5 Silkies, 3 Buff Orpingtons
Hi, my little 9 week buff orpy's feathers seem to be curling up instead of smooth like her 2 sisters. also bare spots underneath. I haven't seen any picking, but she also seems thin. Her breast bone is very prominant.
I was watching a video of using the hog rings. Do they then have sharp points sticking out? I wouldn't think that would be safe for flapping around in. 🤔
