    Grass-less Dirty Chicken Run

I've done deep litter for 10 years - 3-5 hens occupying 4m2, top half of the cage is covered, lower half is open. A trouble free success. The more litter, the happier and more industrious the girls are, and the deeper they dig. :-) I add whatever litter I can access - grass clippings, horse...

    Grass-less Dirty Chicken Run

This is exactly my experience, Aaron. Deep litter is such a successful system for chickens, owners and gardeners alike!

    Grass-less Dirty Chicken Run

Sounds like you're developing a deep litter situation. It's the best! Encourages all sorts of insects in, and the chickens enjoy digging through the litter and they get bugs to eat from it. I'm a bit fan of deep litter and I have been doing it for years.

That mulch makes excellent compost for the fruit trees! They sound like a great idea. Has anyone ever used them before?

Not getting enough water from nipple waterer?

With a deep water dish, every time a hen comes from the feeder she has food all over her beak, which she then dips into the water and leaves behind. Every time they dig around in the dirt they have filth and who knows what else on their beak, which then drops into the water dish and washes off...

Not getting enough water from nipple waterer?

We live in Australia. We transitioned our girls from the “ever getting dirty” deep water dish to horizontal style nipple waters some years ago. It didn’t take long to transition them, and they seem to enjoy picking at it out of curiosity as well as when wanting a drink. Yes, it is always a...

How many hens can I fit in my coop?

I have a pen that is 4m2 and I keep four hens in it. One m2 per hen. It only works because I either a) run it as a deep litter pen, with almost daily additions of kitchen scraps, grass clippings, horse manure, weeds and prunings from the garden, to keep the girls happy and occupied, or b) move...

    Muddy Chicken Runs.

Absolutely a fan of a deep litter situation. Been doing it for years. First make sure you're not overstocking. Absolute max 1 hen per m2. Second check that they are not in a low spot. Third, add carbon to their pen! Initially, I'd put a couple of bails of hay in there (take out the twine) and...

When should we switch to layer feed? Chickens are 14 weeks old.

I'm seeing lots of very specific reasons to feed the right feed at the right time. Would appreciate help in deciphering what I should do for my girls. I have: One 3+yo, purchased at produce store as a "commercial red layer" - laying 4+ times a week One 2 yo, as above, laying a 35 day cycle, then...

    Chicken water nipples reviews?

Perhaps they didn't work because of a vacuum? Was there any air hole in the top of the bottles you used?

    Chicken water nipples reviews?

While my girls were adjusting, I spent time in the coop, demonstrating that water can drip from the nipple. They would drink from my finger tip then peck around where my finger was pecking around. They eventually worked it out. Because it was high summer, I also placed a bucket of water in the...
