No kidding about the expense. I originally sold my husband on chickens saying, "We'll save so much money on eggs!" Yeah right!
I hope that Elector spray works for you! I can't imagine your frustration. I'll be checking the hens frequently in case I missed anything and I'm saving your list of...
So I checked the hen with the red rump and the broody hen- no signs of mites or lice that I could see (though I'm itchy thinking about it). I found some blue paste that I think is like bluecote spray, so I put that on her just in case she's being pecked. I also looked in the nesting boxes for...
Thank you! I'm heading out soon to check everyone (waiting until they're good and sleepy) so if it is mites and I need to go that route, I'll check TSC for the natural stuff and call the Dr about the spray. I'm brainstorming people who might be able to pitch in. I can't thank you (and everyone...
Do you have any idea if it's safe to be used around pregnant women? I'm 23 weeks pregnant with #5 and I'm trying to figure out how to make this insect assault happen
Do I need to clean out the coop or can I just spray everything? And are the eggs safe to eat while I'm treating the chickens or should I get rid of them?
Here are some (not so good) pictures I grabbed this morning....
The first picture, the Easter eggers have some patches, but there's downy like feathers growing in, so I think the patches are from molt.
The second picture is the hen I'm concerned about. That red patch is on the front of her...
I can't compare it to anything, but in my opinion, it's not horrible, just some bald patches on their backs and necks (so maybe the rooster). I don't notice blood or any major redness. The broody hen has less feathers, but that's normal? I'll be interested to see what you think when I post the...
Oops- and I have 10 hens (plus Mr Rooster).
I'm sure the gang that's hiding their eggs found another spot, I just can't for the life of me figure out where it would be!
We are in Easten Pennsylvania and they eat Purina layer pellets with some kitchen scraps thrown in occasionally (leftover scrambled eggs, stuff from the kids' lunches, veggie scraps). I was wondering if I should add protein, but they get scrambled eggs fairly often, I didn't know if it was...
I'm looking for some chicken wisdom- this is my first time raising chickens and my flock is a little over a year old. At the end of the winter/very early spring, I noticed the hens beginning to molt. I didn't notice a huge drop in egg production, but it was winter, so it had been spotty anyway...
I just introduced my 1 week australorps (6) to my day old buff/barred rocks (4). They seem to be mixing okay, save for some hierarchy establishment, but should I worry about the older ones keeping the littles out of the "cave"?
My chicks have arrived! They were just huddled together in the center of the brooding bin, so I showed them their "cave". They're quiet now but they're all huddled inside. Is that okay? Do they just need time to warm back up after the trip home? First time chicken owner here :( Thanks!
The heating pad came in the mail today. I can barely tell its on :( I have the Premier heat plates coming- I'll see what I can do with them. Thanks, @bruceha2000
Darn...I was worried about that, but found the link to it reading an article about making a MHP. I'll see how it works. I ordered a Premier heat plate too, so I have a backup in case it doesn't work out. The MHP just seemed much more cozy!
