Update: She refused to get off the nest while I had the kennel door closed, so I opened the door after 2 days. Now she gets off for about an hour every morning and goes back into the kennel on her own, yeah! We are on day 5 and so far she is doing great.
Yes, she has fresh water & food in the kennel and far enough away that she has to get out of the nest to get to it. I will keep an eye on her today, I'm not to worried yet. Thanks for your feedback.
Moved her last night after dark, put her and the eggs in a kennel with a nest box. She protested a little but settled down and stayed on the new nest. My problem today is she has not gotten off the nest to eat or drink, she is locked in the kennel so I would see signs of her being off the nest...
Thank you for your feedback, I have put together a box to put into a kennel that I have, I'm going to move her into it this evening and leave her in the coop. I am going to lock her in the kennel for a few days to make sure she doesn't abandon them. So you think I could open the kennel after a...
I have a Light Brahma that has gone broody! I am very excited as this is my first broody hen, but she has decided to use a favorite nest. I just checked on her this morning and there was another hen in the nest with her laying an egg. I'm sure there will be 6 or 7 eggs added daily, how can I...
Kelly11, I am just south of Xenia. I have RIR, Red sex link and Black Australorp covered by RIR rooster that has proven himself with 98 - 100% fertility recently. How many eggs are you looking to sit?
I bought 12 buff's about 5 weeks ago. I was told they were 17 weeks at that time, I thought they looked small for that age and figured they were probably 10 - 12 weeks instead. With that being said I would guess them to be 15 - 17 weeks old now, at what age should I start looking for eggs? None...
I didn't get that warning before placing 11 brahma eggs in the incubator for my New Year's Day hatch. At 5 days old I can already see a difference in personalities from the RIR's. I can put my hand in the brooder and one of the brahma's will climb onto my hand while the RIR's run.
It's...
The one I had to assist is the same way. I placed a shoe box in the brooder to keep it separated from the others, I had one more hatch after the assisted one so I have those 2 together in the shoe box, they are doing great together.
Here are my babies:
Put the assisted hatch and last one to hatch in isolation (shoe box) inside the brooder! The black one in the shoe box is the one that was shrink wrapped, it also has a small protrusion at the umbilical area that the other chicks were picking at, hence isolation. I think...
Final count: 21 of 29 hatched, lost the first one due to operator (me) error. So my final total is 20 of 29 or .6896 (69%). Will post pic this afternoon or evening as I am waiting to add the assisted hatch to the brooder as it has a umbilical protrusion.
2 - 3 different breeds but the same as what has already hatched, Brahma, RIR, RSL x RIR, BA x RIR. The one that is pipped has only been pipped for 3 - 4 hours.
I have a Question.
I set 29 at 3 pm on 12/11/13, moved 25 to lock down at the end of day 18. First hatch was at 8:45 am 1/1/14, got up this morning to 13 chicks in the incubator (1st to hatch didn't make it). I had one this evening that I almost waited to long to assist, it was glued inside...
