First winter storm & lessons learned

We moved from Idaho to sc this summer, with 10 birds in the back of my car. In Idaho during the winter, I used a 12’ x 12’ barn stall split in half with sewn together hunters blankets dividing. One side was “heated” with four heat lamps for nesting boxes…stayed at least 40 during the worst sub...

    Fowl Pox?

Fowl Pox is like a really bad flu for us. It wears on them greatly. If they have something else going on it can compound that. This hen has fowl pox. Vitamins and immuno-boosting will help her through it after several weeks (4-6), but it also about age and other chicken environment...

    Fowl pox

No sign of wet pox. Super close to eyes and nostrils, I treated those first and checked routinely. In both cases running about, eating, drinking...with scabs. Passed 12-18 hours later. No chicks. Also recently added 5 to the flock days after losing my hen and signs within my existing flock...

    Fowl pox

Out of my flock of 11, 10 hens and a rooster, I have lost a hen and just this evening my rooster due to a pox outbreak even with feeding major vitamins and proteins once the outbreak started, while caring for their pox areas with warm water and antibiotics. Pay attention to each one's behavior...

Cleaning feeders and waterers (indoors vs. outdoors)

Using the water from tubs is virtually the same impact as the sink. I had two waterers in the winter, although we had electricity where they were and kept it reasonable for them. It was more out of our convenience in the cold. We carried a new waterer out in the winter full and mixed with...

    Using a Heat Plate

Do you have a thermometer to measure actual temperature inside the area?

    Using a Heat Plate

I have a 12x12 space for my flock. I have half the space lined with the emergency blanket material, the other half with more sturdy hunter blanket material. 5 heat lamps and it’s been in the 40s at least all season long in idaho.
