A chook CAN be a carrier of the Marek's whether vaccinated on not. The vaccine only helps the bird fight the disease. Read the article by nambrth (sp) on this site to answer your questions. It is long, but the best for we backyard owners. Once a chicken is exposed, they will always be a...
So, if you look at this picture, where does this gland fit into the body of the chicken? Does this whole thing sit a top the chicken? Or is only the duct/papilla/epidermis visible?
In this picture I only see the nipple. I don't see the gland. On my chicken it is like a human boob: a bump, and then the nipple on top of that. Is that normal?
I have yet to find a description/picture of what a normal preen gland (uropygial gland) and nipple look like, or a detailed description of its contents.
Is the oil clear or opaque?
What is the oil color?
Does the nipple sit flush, or does the gland have a rise to it with the nipple off of...
I use this for my hospital cage. It hangs up and out of the way and has no footprint (does not use up cage floor space). Easy to fill by turning upside down to fill, and then upright it to hang. It is a gravity waterer. I would not use for more than one bird nor would I use this as a feeder...
Hi Amanda - My vet charged $95 for the necropsy, and the University of Wisconsin Vet Diagnostic Lab charged me $135 for the pathology. Though rather pricey, now I know I have Marek's in my flock; there is no question now, and I can take the actions needed to help stop the spread.
Checking back in with the status on my 4 yo hen (Pearl) mentioned in the original post.
I put Pearl down, and had the vet do necropsy, and take samples to send to state pathologist. Pathologist confirmed Marek's. I have been busy notifying all chicken people in my county and bordering...
If the crop is soft, I would focus on sour crop remedy. Isolate her today without food. Chickens can live several days without food (just like we can). The neck movements I believe are because of discomfort in the Esophagus. I think stuff in the crop is backing up into esophagus, causing them...
So, what now? I will cull her, but what about the rest of my flock? How do you handle the whole Marek's thing once you have it in your birds and on your property? Do I vaccinate all birds that are over 1 day old since the virus is "everywhere" including my hair? I have a cockerel chick I...
