Thank you everyone for the advice and tips. To the poster above mentioning lack of adequate ventilation in the coop design I chose, that’s why I had mentioned adding a solar set-up to run a small exhaust fan.
That’s cool. I’m fine with 6 hens in that coop then.
I could also simply increase the width of the coop so it's the same width as the run and give them a little more room as well.
Coup is 69-1/4” x 62-3/4” which is 11 square feet. 6 feet per bird of coop space doesn’t seem right. Plenty of people use this particular coop build for 10 birds and it’s been super popular and never heard of of anyone only using it for just 2 birds if it’s only 11 square feet for the coop and...
Thank you for all the incredible advice! I edited the thread and added in climate conditions.
Regarding drainage, that isn’t a concern of mine. Even with that woodshed I built on the same type of ground the chickens will be on, runoff isn’t an issue and it’s dry underneath. There’s enough duff...
Not really sure where to begin, and my apologies if this thread gets long-winded, but figured it would be better to put all my initial questions in one thread (or all my eggs in one basket!) instead of several smaller threads.
I’m located in the foothills of the Cascades in Southern Oregon. The...
You're absolutely correct! I'm originally from the Northeast and the winters back east are way more harsh than out here. Once the winter moves in back east it stays cold concisely until the spring. Out here it varies a lot more. It can snow several feel one day and then be 50+ degrees the next...
I am brand-new to chickens (don't even have them yet!). I will be building a coop within he next few weeks, weather permitting. I'll be using the plans I got from the Third Coast Craftsman and making the run 4 ft longer than the plans so there's just around 125 sq ft of space in the run, not...
