    Gender for this Easter Egger?

Who can help me with the gender of this 8 week old easter egger please? Pretty sure that the flock mates in the background are hens, and it seems to me that except for the red in the comb the one in the foreground could be a hen as well. Thanks so much for your opinions 😁

Sick hen, can't figure out what's wrong, help!

I don't think she is egg-bound either, and her breathing seems normal. I have not seen her pass anything since I isolated her this morning, nor before that either. She did make it onto the roost last night, I picked her off it this morning. She is making no attempt to get on the roost in her...

Sick hen, can't figure out what's wrong, help!

My 2 year-old EE is not acting normally. She is lethargic, and doesn't eat or drink, as far as I can tell. I noticed it first last night when she didn't run to get a treat, and isolated her this morning. I have tried to check her out, but found no evidence of any issues. Her crop seems empty and...

New chicks with mama hen in the coop, treadle feeder and nipple waterer, help?

I have a first time mama hen who just hatched some chicks in the coop with the other 5 hens. I have water in buckets with nipples, and a treadle feeder. The coop is raised, with a ramp. I have a large run where the chickens roam. Do I have to worry about providing food or water separately for...

    Roosting outside in Freezing weather

Yes! All inside tonight. How long should I leave the netting on? Will a week be enough? How long does it take a chicken to form new habits? Those outside roosts are mighty attractive!

    Roosting outside in Freezing weather

So tonight we have two less roosters, and netting stapled under the rafters. This afternoon I locked them in the coop so I could do the work, let's see if they go in on their own tomorrow...

    Roosting outside in Freezing weather

Here's a picture of them roosting inside on a night when they were on coop arrest for a week or so. There is a third roosting bar lower down yet (about 12" from the floor), which they only use to move to the upper roosting bars. The two mature hens are on the lower bar to the left. The next...

    Roosting outside in Freezing weather

Two of the cockerels are slated for freezer camp soon. There may be a fifth cockerel as well, just not sure. I did try putting a light on in the coop for an hour after dark, while leaving the pop door open, but it didn't encourage the young chickens to move inside. Also the mature hens that were...

    Roosting outside in Freezing weather

They are roosting on the rafters of the covered part of the run. It's not an option to remove them. I guess I could block that off for a while by stapling some chicken wire at the bottom for a while. Good thought!

    Roosting outside in Freezing weather

Of my two mature hens are one is thoroughly cowed by the young cockerels at the moment, does not leave the coop easily. Don't think either of them is keeping the young ones out. I have a lot of ventilation on the wall of the coop that has the pop door. There's a window which is at least 2...

    Roosting outside in Freezing weather

Of the 10 chickens that are 6-7 months old 4 are cockerels. The coop door closes after dark. These chicks were added to the flock about 4 months ago.

    Roosting outside in Freezing weather

My 6 months old chickens refuse to roost inside the coop. I live in northern BC, and even at nights where it's -10 Celsius they still roost outside on some crossbars in the covered part of the run. I have locked them inside the coop for a week, but as soon as I let them out again they again...

    6 Week Old Cockerel Crowing

I had a six-week old put out what sounded like a first crow this morning. Unfortunately I didn’t spot who it was!

    Introduction

I am afraid that joining this forum is eating up a lot of time! So many things to learn! Thank you all for sharing your abundant knowledge. I am now pondering how I can introduce my chicks to the rest of the flock asap, by providing them escape from the big girls. Now off to feed my chickens...
