    9 year old hen- prolapse

thank you LaFleche for your helpful input. Makes perfect sense that an older chicken might "sag" or not be as tight. She's back with the flock and doing well. I don't really expect her to lay.... last year she laid for a few weeks then went back into retirement. But I will ensure she has...

    9 year old hen- prolapse

Well, I'm starting to wonder if she really was prolapsed or not. Nothing ever poked out of her vent it just was enlarged and open-- and pulsing. Her distress coincided with laying a thin shelled egg, and now I wonder if she was just having a tough time pushing an egg out. She seems bright and...

    9 year old hen- prolapse

This morning she seems pretty good. Butt was messy, there was one largish but very wet (ie flat) dark green poop with some white (urate?) spots. Did a quick wash/soak-- she is strong enough to fight that. Applied prep H and coconut oil. Nothing is protruding, it just seems the vent remains...

Warning: graphic photo. Prolapse- Is there ANY chance of recovery?

I'm sorry for your loss. It's clear you cared for her, but were strong enough to let her go, rather than let her suffer. Sometimes it's just hard.

    9 year old hen- prolapse

My 9 year old hen laid a few eggs earlier this year, then paused. Yesterday I found a smallish egg that I believe was hers (based on size and color- -I only have one other hen laying, and her eggs are larger) There was also a soft shell egg in the laying box. Fast forward to this evening...

    Timid flighty hen turns vicious

Thank you Moodleroni-- that was sort of my thought process, but I appreciate the validation. Just totally keep her in the cage? She's eating and drinking in the cage, so she should be fine. (as mad as I am at her, I still gave her food and water)

    Timid flighty hen turns vicious

I originally posted because my big Buff Orphington was being terrorized by the hen is normally the most timid. Buffy was isolating, felt like she'd lost weight. She's 3 and is not laying, so there's a chance of a reproductive disorder but no obvious symptoms. I caged her for a bit, then let...

Hen is not well, but nothing obvious is wrong? would love some advice

OK. So 9 days later.... Buffy is doing well. She's alert, she eats well, socializes well. I started just letting her socialize with Goldie, the matriarch. Then yesterday let her out with two hens, while the mean hen was caged. Everything is fine with the 3 of them. They wander around...

Hen is not well, but nothing obvious is wrong? would love some advice

She's eating "some". I continue to be disappointed in how much food appears to be gone, but I see that she's pooped so she is eating some. I don't see much water consumption. On a hunch, this afternoon, I let her out of the cage for snacks, while the matriarch hen was also in the coop. The...

Hen is not well, but nothing obvious is wrong? would love some advice

This morning Buffy was bright and made it clear she wanted to come out with the others. I obliged, but it did not last long. It appeared there may be a little more bad behavior from the bad girl, and Buffy was keeping just a bit of distance. So I played it safe, topped off food and water, and...

Hen is not well, but nothing obvious is wrong? would love some advice

Update: I have raised the hospital cage up onto the roost, and ziptied it securely to the walls. So Buffy is on the roost, just in the cage. She can see the other hens, and hopefully that makes her feel more secure. She has eaten mealworms, bread, blueberries, and some gourmet mix of peanuts...

Hen is not well, but nothing obvious is wrong? would love some advice

Thank you for your reply and advice. She's still bright and alert. She's resting quietly and talking a bit. She ate some mealworms, and a few blueberries. She's in the cage, but still in the coop, and the matriarch hen has been to check on her several times (without any signs of...

Hen is not well, but nothing obvious is wrong? would love some advice

This morning let the hens out of the coop without mishap, or noticing anything off. Returned to clean coop around noon, and the Buff Orphington is hiding under the roost. She came out, and was talking a bit. I put her on the roost, checked a few basics-- she feels like she's lost weight, but...

    Another hen with sour crop

Hi, it's been quite some time since I've dewormed them. The last time I dewormed, I used Wazine and I ended up losing a couple hens. No one passed any worms, but right after I dewormed, one was sick/floppy comb and passed. Then a week or so later the same thing happened to a second hen. It's...
