My chickens are doing the same thing this week. Each day since DST between 2-4 hens and the rooster are locked out. It's plenty dark, not sure why they're not going in as they're use to. Frustrating!
I give my girls (6 months old) treats and up to this point I've been just putting it on an old tin in their run (which is grass). Should I be scattering it instead?
Our winds primarily come from the window side of the coop (west). I'm hoping we'll have time to build a little overhand over their ramp area to keep their automatic door from freezing up or down.
We keep their food and water inside the coop. The waterer is nipple style and will be heated. The nest box is on the west side of the coop which were we live will be protected the most from wind. There is actually a little bit of a lip over the boxes so hoping it will be good.
We plan on keeping that window shut in winter. They do have roof and eave ventilation. We thought about putting straw bales around the open area under the coop as well as building a straw wind break near their door/ramp.
Hi everyone. We are new to chickens. Our girls are currently 5 months old. I'm concerned about their first winter here in central Ohio.
