Help me decide on a chicken coop

Seems like a lot of nesting boxes -- which takes up valuable space -- in a smaller coop. My coop as 3 nesting boxes and my ladies ALWAYS use the same one. But it looks well built and predator proof.

I did, thank you! And the bonus was it was only about 10-15 minutes from my house :)

Large, Open-Air Coop in Central NC

Our coop is plastic; an automatic door is not an option. Also, because our coop sits entirely inside a predator proof run, I won't have to close the coop door at night in the summer -- they'll go in at dark and come out when it's light -- and be protected the entire time.

Very impressive! And I loved reading all the updates over the years - very helpful, especially for those of us just starting out. I was originally brought to your post to see a better picture of the grit and oyster shell feeders and want to do something similar but have a container above it to...

DIY Grit and Oyster shell Feeder- My first contribution

I'm with you -- pvc pipe is expensive. And the smaller the piece you get, the more expensive it is! I like the recycled ideas in this thread.

Anyone have their coop inside of a large run? Pics?

not necessarily ... we are putting our coop inside of our run but have raised the coop 20" off the ground so they can roam underneath the coop as well.

I wasn't being clear about the reason for the strips. First, it would keep the coop darker at night but I had also read about putting fabric strips up when the weather is colder and keeping drafts out of the coop if (all) the chickens don't want to be out in the run; the 'fabric strip doorway'...

totally new here! thoughts on coop design in predator land?

Our run roof will be sloped so that any rain runoff will go downhill away from the run. There will be an overhang on one side but I'm not understanding DH on exactly which side (he doesn't like his designs questioned haha). The run/coop will also be partially under a large shade tree so will be...

Large, Open-Air Coop in Central NC

I followed all of your posts in this thread after your suggestion that my DH and I could have built an open air coop/run -- something I'll admit I never even thought of as we had picked out our coop last year and DH designed the run AROUND the coop. You guys did a great job! It does give me a...

totally new here! thoughts on coop design in predator land?

New to actually keeping chickens although it's been a dream for over 6 years -- in fact, we are in the process of building the run (10x10) which will house a small Formex coop raised 24" off the ground for the 3 hens we are getting from a local farm. The run will be completely enclosed in...

Where can I buy quality pullets near Charlotte NC?

Thanks for all of your suggestions ... I had heard of a few of the farms mentioned but I did find a farm about 15 minutes from my home to get my pullets from.

    Plastic coops

Formex makes plastic coops in 2 sizes; we bought ours from MyPetChicken.com and the best part they are made in the USA and ship for free!

I live in Belmont have been dreaming of owning chickens since I joined BackYard Chickens in 2015 and my dream is finally becoming a reality!! We will be first-time chicken owners once we get the coop put together and the chicken run built. Based on my research, I feel it is best to start off...
