I'm from Oklahoma also. I live in Pawhuska. I have Buff Orphingtons, Leghorns and 3 Cochins. I use the Cochins for incubators when they go broody. Really good gals for that. I love my girls, and the one happy Roo. They sure give me a lot of enjoyment.
I dont use heat in my coops. One coop is a chain link dog pen that is 8x5x10, and I have all sides covered with plastic sheets to keep the wind off them. The top is covered with tin. I think the cold winds are the worst for them. When they roost they all huddle together, and their feet are kept...
How wonderful. Chickens are addictive. I absolutly love my girls and the roo. I have a chick right now sitting on my neck at the pc. I started out with 6 guineas. Now I have 16 buff orphingtons hens, one B.O. Roo, 9 leghorn hens, and 3 cochin hens.
Make sure the chicks are warm, have plenty of...
I have buff orphingtons, and they started laying at 6 months. When I first started and didnt have laying boxes, I used a medium box, and cut the end out of it, put hay in it, and they loved it. Nice and private. Then when it got dirty looking, I threw the hay in the garden, Burn the cardboard...
Yes, I've decided it is best to put the Roo in the freezer. My girls are so happy with him gone. I meant my hens are Leghorns.....not pullets....I couldnt think of Leghorns to save my life?
My buff orphington Rooster and hens all do great together. I dont need another Rooster in the smaller...
I have a mean Roo I took out of the coop Wednesday, and he is set for the freezer this Sat. I am sad about that, as I really like him, but he is soooooo mean to the hens. He runs them away from the food....he hides inside the door of the coop and when a hen tries to go inside, he grabs them by...
The best incubator I ever purchased are my Cochin hens. I have found that it's work free for me! When they are broody, I put eggs in their nest and in 20-21- days.....I have chicks.
My one cochin has been broody twice this year.
I had also searched for incubators, and everything was time...
I just read about how to deworm chickens "naturally" in my magazine I recieved yesterday. It is very a lengthy article....It basically consists of feeding them pumpkin, carrots, dandylion leaves and garlic.
Cut the pumpkin in half, and just throw in some grated carrots, dandylion leaves and...
Hi Mistari...sorry about your chickens being supper for a preditor.
I purchased an 8x10 chain link dog kennel for my hens. Covered it with canvas on the outside, to keep the wind and rain off them, have the top covered with tin. I made them a 16x16 chicken yard, out of hog panels, and covered...
Well....for its sake, I hope its a hen also. I thought I was onto something with the little dot on the leg....maybe not though. LOL
Hope my picture of my yorkie and chick gets posted with this message??? If not....try try again.
I have a 2 week old chick in the house. Let the cochin set, as she was broody....only gave her 2 eggs to set. One hatched, one didnt.
The chick thinks my yorkie is its mamma. It follows maggie all over the house. The chick is an orphington, and I think it is gonna be a roo..... I cant put this...
