I don't know if this helps, but I was told by a lady who had raised chickens for years,to a a teaspoon of cayenne and a tablespoon or so of cooking oil(to help make up for fewer bug to eat) per gallon'ish to their water. I just remembered this since I've went from 9-10 per day to 0 and am still...
Good to hear I won't give up on her then, at this point she is enough of a pet that I can't get rid of her even if she doesn't lay but I will keep fingers crossed. Hopefully once there are more than two of them she will feel more comfortable.
The coon apparently had caught her at one point and...
I started this spring with 5 Bantam Phoenix hens, 1 Bantam Frizzle Hen and 1 Bantam Phoenix Roo, all hatched in February. In August tragedy struck and I lost all but 1 Phoenix hen and the Roo to a large boar coon. I have since changed the coop set up so that it is hopefully predator proof and am...
I love milk goats, much more personable than cattle in my mind, could just be my mind set from growing up with beef cattle but I always thought my goats were as much pet as utlitarian. Hoping to get one again soon myself.
Best of luck no matter what you decide, although I have to think you have the right idea. It will be a much happier experience if you find a girl that is already friendly and will help you learn about cattle and milking and all.
i agree that she is braced to run but watching first and also agree that some cattle don't show with a tail but those that do are a clear read so still valid to watch
actually that pic looks like she might be workable, she has a kind and curious if wary expression and her tail seems relaxed. As to what to look for, the expression kink in her tail is actually quite literal, if they throw throw their tail up or if it is tense, that is a sure sign of not good...
While I agree that they are tameable but as someone who has dealt with cattle my entire life (was raised on and continue to live on a beef ranch) there are definately some big considerations here, if she has never been handled she is not going to be easy to tame, or even worse if she has been...
I purchased 5 bantam hens (all white, was given a discount as it is not an accepted color) and 1 bantam rooster (silver), along with 1 frizzled bantam that none of the other chickens besides my phoenixs liked. They seem to be healthy and happy, while still a little flighty, they are good to...
I realize that crowing is just part of the deal with having a rooster but is it possible to distract them somehow, I have made a few late evening (so far no night crowing, fingers crossed) thinking the dogs are bothering only to find my bantam pheonix rooster looking at me like, "just seeing if...
I hadn't thought of doing my panels as hoops, and I actually have a roll of welded wire that a contractor damaged so I didn't use it in the yard fence but I bet I could still get some panels out of, so that could be a much better idea. I am mostly worried about hawks and eagles but we do have...
I would think that 1x1 should be plenty big enough, that is all the bigger I am making the nest boxes in my winter coop and only slightly smaller than the ones in the portable coop kit that I purchased. Also the only issue I can see to having the nest boxes closer to the front would be weather...
I would like to allow my chickens free- range but due to the large number of predators (including the ranch dogs and cats) I don't think that is an option at this time. So I am trying to build some really basic portable panels, that could be attached to the coop or used independently. My basic...
I haven't ever tried it, as I don't have any peacocks near me, but I have been told by a few people that if you run fishing line across an area, 6+ feet high (what ever it needs to be to not be in you way) and about 18-24 inches apart, they will not be able to fly in and out and will leave...
