    how to mass cull?

Quote: Thank you .22 won't work since they are all under 12 weeks. Our ranged from 10 weeks to about a year old, it went fine. I am on the verge of OCD with humane culling around here so a $20 box of shells was well worth my chickies not having to suffer. Best of luck!!

    how to mass cull?

We just had to "de-populate" our entire flock. We found that a .22 shot to the head with a second shot to the chest was very quick and effective. But depending on where you live sometimes shooting isn't an option. Sorry for your losses! I know how bad it hurts to lose so many.

Entire flock lost- Ideas on disease?

Thanks for the support! It is not rude at all, we are in an extremely rural area of South-Eastern Ohio, right near the Muskingum River. I am actually waiting to hear back from OSU about the pictures I have sent. As soon as I know anything I will definitely pass it along. So far we have not...

Entire flock lost- Ideas on disease?

My nightmare started about a week ago and is still going on! Our chickens range in age from 10 weeks to 1 year, our ducks are a little over a year old, and our turkeys are 8 weeks old. About 2-3 weeks ago we finally moved my daughter's show chickens, Golden Polish, out to their newly built...

best way to euthanize a baby chick

As much as I hate culling, I have found that a .22 shot to the head is quick and humane. We just did this today. Best of luck to you!

    Disinfectant

Thank you! It is definitely not possible to move the main coop, the shed where the coop is located was built in 1860 and still all original except for the inside. It really isn't clear where we picked it up, the two options we have are a wild bird that we found dead in the yard with the same...

help, pecked on new chicken - what do I do?

I have found that "triple antibiotic" ointment heals most chicken wounds. Just make sure they stay clean, washing with saline is great. I agree with everyone else, unless you are introducing quite a few birds at the same time, keeping them in the coop but in a cage is a nice, calm way to go...

Dead rooster and sick looking hen. Any ideas?

Just a guess: After checking out the symptoms it almost sounds like Moniliasis (Thrush). It is very treatable with Nystatin or an antifungal. After treating the birds it is also recommended to disinfect the food and water containers. It is normally contracted by moldy food, possibly...

    Disinfectant

Not to butt in... what mix of lime and water would you use? I have a barn cat that normally hangs around the coop, would it have an effect on him? We have gone through a nasty week with pullorum and lost our entire flock of chickens, either to death or de-population as recommended by several...

how common is bacillary white diarrhea? and should I be concerned?

My chickens range from 10 weeks to 1 year. The vet was slightly confused by the older chickens contracting it but because we found a wild bird in the yard with the same symptoms he said could be the reason for them becoming infected at such an age. Symptom wise it first starts off as white...

how common is bacillary white diarrhea? and should I be concerned?

So sorry to hear about your chicks! I am actually going through the woes of pullorum right now. After talking to the extension office in our area and speaking with several educators in Animal Medicine at OSU here in Ohio, the out look is not good. I was told to completely de-populate our...
