    Injured ducks won't eat

Update - so sir francis (drake) can reliably be coaxed to eat - just has to be fed from my hand for some reason. I have got jemima to try a nibble too. Georgiana is still quite reluctant. All are drinking though.

    Injured ducks won't eat

I have though about that tonight, I cant believe it. They have injured necks and I have been giving them food and water in trays on the ground. Of course they dont want to bend their necks down to it. Ugh. What type of mush would you recommend? Duck food mixed with water? Baby food?

    Injured ducks won't eat

As I said, they are on painkillers, and I have tried enticing them with peas, but with only a little success. I would be willing to do a feeding tube but I would like to keep that option as worst case scenario. I shall try bugs or slugs, something moving, it might attract their attention more.

    Injured ducks won't eat

I have three pekin ducks, four days ago a mink got into their coop and slashed their necks. Luckily they have all made it this far and their wounds are healing, the vet has given antibiotics and pain killers taken daily. They are living in the house right now so I can keep them clean and monitor...

    oyster shell questions

I get what you mean about them being creatures of habit. But after watching the drake get in a fight with his reflection in the glass door (which got to the point where I had to fence off the back deck), I have a much better understanding of where the expression "bird brain" comes from.

    oyster shell questions

Thanks, I think I'll try putting some on the ground and some in a bowl. I hope they figure it out. I've had shell-less eggs every day for the last 5 days, and she ALWAYS lays it and eats it right after. Then my dog finds the slimy membrane which he brings in and deposits on the couch. Tired of...

    oyster shell questions

Are you sure? They're pretty stupid. Like really stupid. Last week I moved their feed 10 feet away from where I normally put it, and I had to put it back because they weren't eating.

    oyster shell questions

So, I'm fairly new to the duck thing. Prior to my four pekins, I had one rescue Musgrove drake, that's all the experience I have with ducks. So my question, 1 of my 3 girls has recently started laying. I picked up some oyster shell from the feed store, but I don't know how to give it too them...

    duck fighting

    duck fighting

So i have two female pekins and two drakes. Is there going to be fighting? I remember from having chickens how aggressive the males can be, are drakes the same?

    duck pond filtration

looks cool, but our pond is definitely not a kiddy pool. Do you think it would work on our scale?

    duck pond filtration

Water changes are not going to happen. It's too big to do that, our well wouldn't be able to supply enough water, and if we were to let it fill naturally it would take a week.

    duck pond filtration

It took me a minute to process what you said but I think I get it. Your talking about having a container of sorts full if stuff for a filter, and using a water pump to get the water up to it, and letting it flow through the container and back into the pond?

    duck pond filtration

thanks! Though the aquaponics thing sounds cool, I'm already going to have my hands full:)do you think one of those single unit filtration systems with a fountain and a box that sits at the bottom of the pond would work?

    duck pond filtration

So Im getting ducks this spring. 5 to be exact. This is one aspect im not sure about, as ive had conflictin results from the internet. so our pond is (im going to try to describe it as well as possible) not moving water, its water level, though nearly flush with the ground, the water table is...
