    Frostbite update on Betsy

I wanted to post an update on my hen Betsy who lost both feet to frostbite. She’s doing amazing! I’ve come up with some padded ‘boot “ type bandages I keep on her. She walks and runs! I recently got her some pullets to befriend as I am unable to integrate her back to original flock..they’re...

Getting New Chicks During Avian Flu Outbreak

I’m wondering about this too! Really wanted to get some silkie chicks this spring. I would quarantine them but I don’t know how long would be safe for protecting my existing flock

    Chicken foot fell off

Update on Betsy… So far so good, she is standing on her padded bandages and moves around using her wings for stability. She does great for bandage changes, no reaction or show of discomfort. Stumps look good no smell or infection present as of now. I clean them gently with a chlorhexidine...

    Chicken foot fell off

Betsy’s other foot is now off. Both are bandaged. The avian vet recommended putting silver sulfadiazine cream on it and change bandage and reapply every few days. She does seem more comfortable now that feet are no longer attached. Anyone who has dealt with this before, how long before the...

    Chicken foot fell off

Ok, the foot came off in a good place (if there’s anything good about it) but some bone exposed. Ideally she should have leg debrided and skin closed over stump. But, vet can’t do it for 2 weeks. There is a chance it will heal over on its own which I think is the way it’s went w others in the...

    Chicken foot fell off

I don’t know how common, but definitely lots of info and videos online about this. I feel awful this happened to her. I just acquired her in December from someone who no longer wanted her. Her feet were a bit mis shaped then so I suspect she had minor frostbite before which made her more...

    Chicken foot fell off

That would be amazing! I’ve seen several videos where middle school kids helped design feet. I’m in Wisconsin but I could measure and take pics of her stump

    Chicken foot fell off

I’m not certain how old she is as herself and another hen were left by me in December. I’m taking her to an avian vet tommorow. Some say bandage others say only do it first few days. Some have had success with padding bandage and chicken walking on that. I’m very interested in prosthetic feet...

    Chicken foot fell off

She had terrible frostbite on both feet. I separated her took her inside house. I treated with antibiotics and...
