The one with the straight line crack in it suddenly hatched.
That gives 9 chicks now, and three remaining eggs. None of the remaining eggs look to have pipped but one has the damaged side that the chicks managed to do earlier. None of these three seem to be moving about at all.
As there are...
One of the remaining ones has now hatched, so we now have 8. There are still four more after that. One of them is the smashed one. I've not seen that one move. One has a straight line crack in it and keeps moving a little bit (looks like a bad pip). The other two aren't showing any signs of...
Thanks, keeping at 70% is difficult at the moment. I could do with removing some of the water now to add warmer water but I don't really want to open it.
I've ended up having to open it quickly earlier to take the 7 hatched chicks out as they were getting too feisty and have smashed the side of...
5 have fully hatched and look healthy so far. Another 3 have pipped and 4 others I can't tell.
The humidity is around 70% at the moment. I couldn't get it above 60% using normal methods so I added hotter water using a straw through the vent hole and a funnel. That way I didn't have to open it...
The turner is external so that was easy to remove. It was the divider bars. I ended up quickly taking the lid of and taking them out and added warm water to the channels. I didn't spray around the eggs though.
I've had no change since. None of the others have pipped, and these two look to have...
I didn't want to risk drying out the two that have pipped, but I don't really know how bad it is to have the bars in - I don't know if it affects the ability to roll the shell about to aid zipping? Or if it just risks injury once they have hatched?
They were just a bunch of eggs from my in laws farm - they always have problems with rats eating the chicks so we tend to hatch them for them in an incubator - they are just a random assortment. Some ex-battery, some marans, some cochins.
There is now two that have pipped - they sound noisy...
I've got a dozen eggs in a Brinsea Octagon 20.
I put them in on a Sunday afternoon, so I counted that as day 0. So I'm expecting them to hatch on Monday which will be day 21. Which made today day 18. So I came to take it off the cradle and to get ready for locking it down for hatching but I...
I've just tried the ice water calibration. Slightly tricky as the thermometer only has a range of 25 to 40*C
However I worked out were 0 should be given the distance of the marks. I used calipers and marked zero. When putting it in the ice water it was coming out at about 3mm higher than...
I only hatch once a year with an Brinsea Octagon 20 eco on an automatic turner.
Unfortunately with only hatching once a year, I forget things!
Now last year I was having a bit of a play with the temperature as there is the age old problem of "which thermometer do you trust?". I just can't...
I'll see if I can find some more. Are they a particularly slow developing breed? At 5 months old I thought I'd see some comb development and start to hear them crowing?
The next hatch which was just over 3 weeks later had a few cockerels and they were easily identifiable and they have now...
I'm still none the wiser! This is a picture of them at 16 weeks old - they are 19 weeks old and still not making any noises. They are still wonderfully gentle - 2 of the friendliest chickens we've had!
