Thanks for the input, Den. I do keep the food and water in the coop so they have overnight access. I'll try keeping them in for a week. I feel bad, like I'm punishing them...they already look restless! :(
Our two hens decided last week that their coop isn't as cozy as our open garage. Every night I have to put a chicken under each arm and carry them across the yard into their coop (talking to them the whole way, explaining why it isn't safe for them to be out where the coyotes can get them)...
That's very helpful, Kate - thank you!
Montana, they are the two in my pic (Lucy & Molly, we're calling them).
Good luck with your little ones to both of you :)
Unfortunately I don't know the answer to that, either. They were given to us as an Easter surprise (and what a surprise that was, never having had chickens before) and came with zero information, so we're on our own.
I'm still desperately trying to accurately gauge how old my little ones are, and I've Googled and Binged and Yahooed my way through useless information trying to find a good collection of pictures of chicks as they grow. Anyone have a good resource?
So I bought two of those screw-on feeder/waterers at TSC last night for our two chicks.
I filled the jar with water, screwed on the top, and flipped it over, efficiently removing all water from the jug and pouring it into the sink. I repeated this process, twice, before giving up and offering...
I'm getting pretty consistent reports on the White Rock, but little Red may forever be a mystery to me :)
What do you think about age? 2 weeks? 3 weeks?
My mystery breeds (though posters here are leading me towards a White Plymoth Rock & Rhode Island Red/New Hampshire Red) are Lucy and Molly...the newest members of our family and the first of the feathered kind!
Thanks for the info! I'm becoming accustomed to the idea now (what a shock it was to be thrown into this unaware) and am educating myself as quickly as I can. I don't want anything bad to happen to the babies!
Thanks to everyone for your helpful advice. The girls are settled in in the basement in a large box, and I even put in some branches for them to roost on. The world of chickens is certainly foreign to me, so I'm sure I'll be around asking more questions!
