One of the favorite crosses I've had so far was a white cochin roo (white egg?) over a silver and black EE hen.(large blue eggs) Chicks were positively adorable. Think chibbi
fied R2D2.
Resulted hens where just as big as mama, had daddy's fuzzy legs and laid large blue eggs that were a couple...
We put arrows on the eggs with the marks so the eggs all go one way ,and then back the next turning. Also cut thin cardboard boxes - like cereal or noodle boxes-down to strips not quite as wide as eggs are tall. -Walls only: no bottoms or tops- These help keep the eggs frpm getting all mixed...
Poor little babies..Looks to me like maybe the cord thingy may have gotten wrapped around their feet. Instead of the yolk drawing up in to the chick, it get becomes disstorted and/or ruptures. Either way, the chick usually dies. I really don't know if there is anything that can be done to...
LOL ....My husband laughed when I 'wallpapered' the inside of the coop with old feed bags. But hey, it does the job.
As for keeping just a few birds warm for the night, I'd have to nuke (1 or 2 mins)a cup or two of rice (dry),pour it into an old sock and then wrap that in enough cloth to not...
I'd try cucumber juice. Just sqeeze a couple of drops out of a slice into the eye.(Peel first, if store bought.)
It's quite soothing, and it may help to relieve some of the irratation and help keep it from getting infected. -Much gentler on eyes than diluted lemon juice.
If nothing else, the...
I really don't use the composer any more. Having clay soil, we dig deep and turn the rows, the go back thru and dig deep into the paths. Soil from paths gets added (along with what ever amenders)to soil in the rows. End up with twice dug, high beds of soil for the rows with low paths in between...
Avoid showing any form of aggression to a rooster. If you try to 'show him who's boss', you're basically putting yourself at the top of their pecking order and you will get a roo that wants to fight you for it every time it gets a chance. The more you try to intimidate him the worse he'll be...
I suppose it's possible to get twins, but I've never had that kind of luck. Here's to hoping yours is better than mine.
Everytime I've put a double-yolked egg in the bator it either didn't develope, or worse, developed and then killed the chick when it couldn't absorb the second yolk. Won't...
Yep, sounds like a broody.....
As far as what you can do for the hens,
Give them lawn trimmings when you mow yard.
A nice layer of fallen leaves-last year's is fine. They'll just scratch them around and break them up
Place boards and or rocks in their yard and turn over every now and again...
If the warm cloth doesn't work for it, try a rather warm (not hot) bath. - An old butter tub will work fine for a young chick, we use an old ice chest for grown birds-. Cover bottom part of back with water, you may have to hold bird up once it starts to relax. Let soak 10 mins or more...
