    Hmm, good point. Neither have been broody before so I've never noted how they "act" when they are. I have been contemplating getting another baby chick...still mourning over the loss of the other hen. She really was a great bird.

    Sad news everyone - shortly after I posted yesterday evening, she passed away. She lived a great four years. :(

    So I gave her a warm water rinse in my garage sink...the black stuff is mostly gone. It does look like her preening gland and it does cause her discomfort when touching it. How should I treat an infection?

    Thanks for the responses! She's my first and only chicken, and she's about 2.5 years old now. I actually did google 'lash eggs' and found photos very similar to what she's been laying randomly. Perhaps that's what she's been laying. I'll continue to keep an eye out. Clint

    6 month update. She still hasn't layed any eggs, but otherwise she is perfectly healthy and fine! Another strange thing at the bottom of her coop this morning. Standard size chicken wire for scale.
