We have a 4"x6" coop that opens onto a 10"x25" run. Our 6 girls are very happy in this space. There are 2 factors that I would consider.
- How much outside space in the run and..
- How much time will they spend in the coop during bad weather.
If part of the run is actually covered...
My pullets don't roost. They just...don't. They were born in early June, so they are around 18-20 weeks old. They still sleep all huddled on top of each other in the corner - she same corner of the coop they slept in when they were tiny gals. We've gone out there pretty regularly and put...

We did trim her beak once, and it bled But since we've planned on trimming it again, but it seems to break off everytime I notice it, so I haven't had to trim it again. Even trimming her beak, she can't hold onto the pellets of food and can't peck up anything small, like seeds and...
I need some suggestions for feasibly feeding our little cross beak Auracana. She's about 4 months old and is one of 6 in our flock. She's half or even less than half the size of her sisters. She has never been the aggressive one - in fact, she's the bottom of the pecking order. But lately...
If you have as many raccoons as you say then I would use 1x2 or 1x1 welded wire. If it is not available in your area then definitely consider a layer of 1" hex poultry mesh inside the 2x4 fencing you are planning to use. Attach your fencing with good staples no greater than 3" apart.
Just as an...
Jsto,
I don't know where you are in NC but if you are close to Raleigh you can get 50lb bags of organic starter and layer feed at Triangle Horse Sports on Old Wake Forest road about a mill up from Capital Blvd. I don't remember the brand off the top of my head but my girls love it. I've got...
That would be a great home for a flock with a bit of work. Can you get a truck up to it? I'd pay a flatbed tow truck to move it so I didn't have to take it apart.
Since most of the coops I build are for families that have small children I decided to do something a bit more fun with my egg doors. Not what is normally expected behind the door.
Just started a new coop for our 6 new little girls (2 Light Brahmas, 2 Gold Laced Wyandotte & 2 Araucanas). I am not going build an integrated run for it as I would for one of my customers coops. I intend to fence out a large run (8'x24') in part of our backyard for the girls. I see that a lot...
I've been using clips like the ones in the picture below. That way I don't have to keep track of the key to the lock. They are available at almost all hardware stores in brass and boat stores have them in bronze. Both help prevent rusting.
All the instructions I've read (including Cackle's) have specified dipping the beaks. The storage room is totally enclosed like part of the house and safe from predators except maybe a 2-1/2 year old. I have her under control most of the time.
Pics of the new kids this weekend.
I have 15 chicks (5 Light Brahmas, 5 Gold Laced Wyandotte & 5 Arancanas from Cackle) at the post office waiting to be picked up in an hour or two. This is the first time I've had chicks this young and I have one question. We are expected to be in the high 80's to very low 90's during the day and...
