Hello everyone, we noticed yesterday that two of our birds have become somewhat lame. One still gets around, but is limping badly (to me his leg looks dislocated, but I'm not sure) the other one can almost not move at all. She won't stand up, but I've seen hers age to shuffle herself over to...
They seem to be doing much better. They are in smaller groups around the brooder keeping occupied by different things rather than all being fixated on one thing. I put lots of nice size branches in the brooder for them to peck at and roost on and sprinkled a few seeds into the litter for them...
Yes, we moved the brooder from our basement to the coop and made the brooder perimeter bigger. They seem calmer (right now). Today I am going to make a trip to town to pickup some more supplies... Boss, iodine, that blue stuff, ummm any other suggestions? Hubby's going to make some roosts...
They have a red light on them for warmth already. We're going to increase the brooder size today, maybe that will help. I'll think about dividers, not sure how to make that happen. Their starter is only 18% protein. It's all we could find. O you think this might be another factor? I'm trying...
Hello, I have 80 cornish rocks that are less than a week old in a med size kids pool. They have been doing well, until I went down to change their water last night. They were all picking on one bird... Badly. Got that one out and noticed another one with blood. This morning, another ....they...
Yep, in the house. I think I'm going to want to move it out to the coop as soon as possible though. I don't know if I want 80 birds in my basement for 5 weeks. So, if not doing the deep litter method on the house how deep should the shavings be to protect the birds from leg problems, and how...
Alrighty, so I read not to change the brooder litter just to add more shavings and stir it regularly. Is this going to create a horrible stench? What do you do? (I have 80 chicks in a kiddie pool). Also, as far as cleaning the feeders & waterers, I'm supposed to do this daily, right? What...
I'm happy to report that my lil chicky is clean and happy back with the rest of the flock. Had to use a Little baby shampoo to get the sticky stuff out, but she's eating and drinking and the others are not pecking her. I feel so much better :) thanks for your help guys!
I tried to Clem the chick, but it appears what I thought was blood might just be something sticky on her head in a few spots. I can't seem to get it out. I put some stop peck on her and tried putting her back, but the other chicks went after her right away. I wonder if it's because she...
Hello everyone! I'm new to BYC and to having chickens. I received my chicks in the mail today and one looks like it has been pecked on its head. They probably got stressed out during shipping. What do I do now? I separated her from the rest but I feel bad for her and would like to see her...
Yep, it hangs from the ceiling. It's about 20" from the floor, but it seems like all the heat is rising. I expected it to be more concentrated at the ground. It's infrared. I picked up another lamp today but it's not making too much difference. I think we need higher walls to keep the heat...
Hello everyone... I'm brand new to BYC. Sorry to hijack this thread, but I can't figure out how to post my own?? I can only see how to reply to others. Could someone point me in the right direction?
We will be receiving 80 meat birds in the mail tomorrow and everything is set up, but my 250...
