Update: Chick didn't make it. Day old chick wandering from hen and hen pecking at it when it returns

Okay, thanks guys. So the baby has completely wandered away and is swaying and closing its eyes. I don't think it will make it through the night considering it is rainy out and it is just hanging outside away from all the other chicks and mama hen. :( Poor baby. This makes me so sad.

    Remove rooster?

Our rooster is fine with the chicks. He even goes and hangs out with mama hen while she is caring for them. He is a very friendly rooster though. I think unless your rooster has shown signs of being mean or violent toward your other birds, it shouldn't be a problem.

Update: Chick didn't make it. Day old chick wandering from hen and hen pecking at it when it returns

This baby did not make it. While I was inside, one of the chickens (possibly even mama) pecked this chick's head leaving a large bleeding wound with skull showing :( :( :( I found the baby near the house shivering, but still alive. I reassured the little baby for a while and talked sweetly to...

    Idaho?

Okay, cool. She is in the coop which isn't in a ton of shade but the sun doesn't beat down on it all day. I have been hosing off the shingles to cool the roof down a little by evaporation. She has 7 chicks in there now and 1 hatching. I have been giving them cool water and frozen grapes to try...

100 degrees and hen still has chicks under her wings

Thank you for the replies. So I have given them cool water twice a day and I wet the roof of the coop to try and cool it down. I am also wetting the ground area all over the run for the rest of the chickens and ducks. The chicks seem to be doing really well today, except for one. It is a little...

    Idaho?

Hey Idahoooo! How are you guys dealing with this heat? My broody hatched 3 chicks and I swear she is gonna kill them keeping them under her wings. They have fresh water, food, and some frozen veggies but she is kind of crazy and when I try to move her away from them she does not like that. She...

100 degrees and hen still has chicks under her wings

Is this safe? I feel like she will do what is best, but she has smothered chicks before and raised some until old age so I am torn. It is going to be 100+ degrees here for at least another week and I am worried about these babies. They can only be a day or two old since I didn't notice them...

    Idaho?

How are you guys dealing with this heat? Lost our "big girl" yesterday from it. She died in a mud hole. She was a cross between a white rock and orpington so she was really large..kind of saw it coming. Still very sad. I am going to put a frozen milk jug in the coop and just try and keep the...

Here are Scott and "Qack-Qack" growing up! They are a ton of fun, but not so friendly anymore. We know we have one female for sure, but not sure about the KC. Does she look female?

Tiny tiny black bugs in the chicken coop, help!

I haven't seen a definitive yes on if these are mites or not? I just found a TON in my coop. UGH. We have never had a bug problem so this is a major bummer. They crawl all on me when I was trying to get the eggs. So gross. Are they mites or just some other pest? They are black with a little bit...

    The Duck Thread

Question about the ducklings... We have decided to use a very deep dog house as their pen. It is already set up and has a ramp going from ground to platform then from platform to pen. It is approx. 2 1/2 feet off the ground. We were going to put bumpers or like netting on the sides of the...

    The Duck Thread

Here is a quick photo of the ducklings. The first the KC and the second the one we got yesterday. Don't mind the wall color - it was a failed attempt at a boy's room. Now it is a duck room. Haha.

Yeah, me too. I just couldn't That little one was too sweet. Our cuddle session didn't help it any! Too cute. So yeah, I am looking forward to having them. Once I charge the camera, I will get a ton of pics :) I'll post some.

Yeah. They were "talking" to each other when I put them together. All perked up. Then when I came back they were laying by the water cuddling. Think it seems good. The other duckling sure sits around a lot. Lazy, I guess.

We are suckers. Just went and got a friend from the same lady that we got our chickens. Appleyard/ Welsh harlequin mix...? Looks like the baby mallard only bigger.
