Training year-old hens (egg eaters) to use new individual nest boxes

Woops - posted too quickly. The coop is 8 x 12 - completely open except for the feed and the waterer which are on blocks in the coop. The last few days have seen several eggs successfully laid in the rollout nesting boxes. Still 1-3 laid on coop floor, but for some reason they aren't eating...

I'll give the higher protein feed a shot - thanks!

I'll follow your suggestion and add back in the kitchen scraps & mealworms. Thank you!

Training year-old hens (egg eaters) to use new individual nest boxes

I'll try the higher protein feed next. The coop/run is 8' x 12'. I've let them out a couple times to see what they'd do and they started to destroy my perennial plantings, both by chomping the leaves and digging under the plants almost digging the roots out. I'm sure they were looking for bugs...

Training year-old hens (egg eaters) to use new individual nest boxes

Thanks for your thoughts! I may need to try letting them out of the coop but I need to figure out the easiest way to do that and still keep them from eating all my perennials and veggies. I would LOVE for them to have a crack at eating some of the thousands of grasshoppers that are currently...

Training year-old hens (egg eaters) to use new individual nest boxes

I feel like a total failure. Flock of 9 are 13 months old and started eating eggs a month ago. They seem almost feral; I've caught them sitting on a laying hen's head or at her rear waiting for an egg to drop then they peck away at it. We had nesting boxes that were (sadly) large enough for 2-3...

    Cream legbar acting sick

Update: she had been in terrible lain for 24 hours. I took her to the vet who doesn’t treat chickens but was willing to euthanize her humanely. So sad, but not as sad as watching her suffer so much. thank you to everyone who tried to help me with this problem.

    Cream legbar acting sick

Well, she won’t let me force water with a syringe. I massaged the vent area liberally with olive oil. The liquid coming out is milky white tinged with blood. She scratches in the dirt briefly then she closes her eyes and bears down but nothing happens. I know she’s in pain. So heartbreaking.

I do have Tums - would I crush it up and mix with water in a little eye dropper and force feed her?

    Cream legbar acting sick

It literally looks like marshmallow creme you would buy in a store. As far as I can tell she hasn’t pooped in 24 hours. She won’t take any water.

    Cream legbar acting sick

She’s not drinking at all and more of the marshmallowey white stuff is leaking out. Sorry for the graphic posts but I know some of you will have had this experience and can help. I so appreciate you all!

    Cream legbar acting sick

I gave her a warm bath which cleaned off some of the white good from her feathers. I had seoarated her yesterday and I searched the pen for poop this morning and ciuldn’t find any. She must be so miserable. What would my next step be?

Something different is happening. She has a flow of something whitish-yellow coming from the oviduct. It wasn’t there last night. It looks stuck on the fewthers
